Mary Elaine Cochrane
1954-2022
It is with great sadness the family of Mary Elaine (McAskill
) Cochrane, beloved wife of Richard, passed away peacefully at home
after a long courageous battle with cancer on Thursday, February 3,
2022
Born in Sydney, NS, Elaine was a true bluenoser proud of her
Nova Scotia heritage and roots in Cape Breton often returning to visit
family and friends. Born to Joseph McAskill and Alice
(McIntyre), she was the pride and joy and always a
‘daddy’s girl’. Elaine was predeceased
by both of her parents and sister Julia Ann.
A lifelong learner and hard worker, the term of
‘jack of all trades’ definitely applied to Elaine.
From being one of the very first female Point Lepreau employees, to
multiple entrepreneurial businesses through the years Elaine met and
encountered thousands of people.
For 18 years Elaine lovingly raised and bred Champion CKC
Golden Retrievers helping change the lives of hundreds of families who
all became ‘extended’ family members and
friends. Her pets, her dogs, her love of saving ALL animals
was well known.
She was a bookkeeper for many local businesses, owned and
operated one of the first nail salons in the area, as well owned a
popular Moncton hair salon (where she unknowingly made Huey Lewis wait
for his haircut in line like everyone else). In her later years,
Elaine loved her job at Pine Acres RV where she and Richard made many
lifelong friends and combined their love of camping with helping
others enjoy the RV experience. A very special
thank you to Matthew Brown and the many wonderful staff at Pine Acres
for ensuring Elaine and Rick had constant support during her battle
with cancer.
Elaine is survived by the love of her life, her devoted
husband of 39 years, Richard Charles. They met on Valentines Day, and
he was truly her forever Valentine. A life of adventures raising
children, camping, trips, mishaps that happen with raising five
children often led for many an entertaining story. Elaine loved to
talk and share memories with her many friends near and far. She loved
to sing, had a beautiful voice, and was known to grab a tambourine and
jump up on many stages to join in. A love for life and all that it
brought, good or bad, Elaine took it all in stride saying it was just
another life experience to learn from.
Elaine is survived by her children, Tracey Lynn Marie Ryan,
Dennis Patrick Ryan, Rebecca Anna May (Ryan) Bomar, cherished stepsons
Donald Thomas Cochrane (Dawn), Craig Clinton Cochrane and son in law
Robert MacKay. She is also survived by her precious and only
granddaughter, Hannah Grace Gogan whom she adored and loved dearly.
She is also survived by chosen daughter and devoted caretaker Melissa
Brown and was a ‘chosen nanny’ to many children
including her special girls Theresa and Serena. She is also survived
by numerous loved cousins and family in Cape Breton.
To the hundreds of people who checked in, called, visited and
brought Elaine moments of levity over the past two years as she
battled cancer, THANK YOU. Your calls, messages, face times and notes
were the bits and pieces of ‘real life’ that kept
her focused and gave her a sense of normalcy during a very hard time.
These friendships, virtual and in person, were very precious to
her.
Elaine’s family will be receiving friends and
relatives on Saturday, from 1-3 PM at Cobb’s Funeral Home
