The family of Mary Chornawka of Yorkton, beloved wife of James Chornawka, sadly announce her passing on March 5, 2022. She was 82 years of age.
In memory of Mary Chornawka, memorial donations may be made to the MacNutt Romanian Orthodox Church Cemetery Fund (c/o Bailey’s Funeral Home 45 5th Ave. N., Yorkton, SK S3N 0Y9) as gifts of remembrance.
Mary (nee) Charambura, the second daughter of Stan and Ann, was born September 12, 1939 on a farm near Togo, Saskatchewan. She was raised on a mixed farming operation while attending public school. After graduating, she pursued employment as a nurse’s aide in Canora and Roblin.
In 1960, while riding the Ferris wheel at the MacNutt sports day, she spotted the love of her life, Jim in a baseball uniform. They were married on July 19th, 1962 at the Romanian Orthodox Church in MacNutt, Saskatchewan. They owned and operated a family farm, both grain and livestock, for 32 years. During this period, they were blessed with five children Brenda, Donna, Karen, Patty and Craig. After retiring from the farm in 1994, they moved to Yorkton where she worked various part-time jobs until 2007.
Mary enjoyed cooking, baking, canning and gardening which she took great pride in. She was very generous in sharing her specialties’ of making perogies, cabbage rolls, headcheese, Easter Breads, buns and cinnamon buns. She loved to teach and pass along her favorite recipes to her children and grandchildren.
Mary cherished spending time with her children and grandchildren and face timed with them often. She loved to share how proud she was of their many accomplishments.
Some of Mary’s hobbies included sewing, writing Easter eggs, crocheting and watching curling. She also enjoyed travelling with her husband to various places across Canada, especially to see the beautiful mountains.
Mary dedicated her time volunteering for her children’s various school and sports activities, making many Ukrainian dance costumes, preparing holy bread for several parishes and as the Orthodox Church Secretary. She devoted her faith to GOD, prayed daily, attended church services and when unable to, she listened to the services virtually.
Mary is predeceased by her parents, Stanley and Anne Charambura, her special grandson Jonathan George (Rosin), her sister Irene and brother in laws, Joe and Gerald. She leaves to cherish her memory, her loving husband James of 59 years, her children and grandchildren, Brenda (Brad); Donna (Brad), Jaelynn and Jordan; Karen (Brad), Kayla; Patty (Bob), Devin and Megan and Craig (Brenda), Tanner and Haley.
The Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, March 9, 2022 from the Yorkton Memorial Gardens Family Centre with Rev. Fr. Andrew Piasta and Rev. Fr. Rod Luciuk officiating. Responses were led by Rodney Flunder, assisted by the choir of the Romanian Community. The eulogy was given by Craig Chornawka. The honorary casket bearer was Devin Bell. The interment followed in the Garden of St. Luke, Yorkton Memorial Gardens with Brad Rosin, Bob Bell, Megan Bell, Kayla Schultz, Jaelynn Graham, Jordan Graham, Tanner Chornawka and Haley Chornawka serving as casket bearers.
