Mary Ann Hope Slattery Friday September 30th 2022 avis de deces

Mary Ann Hope Slattery
April 24, 1948 – September 30, 2022
Surrounded by those she loved most and with gratitude for an extraordinary life, Mary Ann Hope Slattery, 74, passed peacefully from this world on Friday, September 30, 2022.
Mary Ann is survived by her husband of 53 years, Terry Slattery, who she lovingly referred to as her “boyfriend.” A love story that was an honour to witness, Mary Ann transitioned moments after her devoted husband reminded her of his everlasting love with a final kiss to her cheek.
Mary Ann is remembered as a loving mother to her children Shannon Ellis and Kelly Slattery, their husbands Geoffrey Ellis and Delaney Miller, an adoring GMum to Grace Victoria Ellis and a loving sister to Susan Dickinson. Mary Ann is predeceased by her father Charles Sweeney of St. Mary’s, mother Hope Sweeney of Saskatoon and sister Elizabeth Niddrie of Toronto.
Mary Ann never met a stranger and was devoted to making the lives of people around her better. When her successful real estate career ended due to her MS diagnosis, she worked to heal herself and became devoted to helping other people.
Through her years of service, Mary Ann worked with the MS Society, led fundraising efforts for numerous charities, volunteered with the food bank, sewed masks for frontline workers during covid, knit hats for kids with cancer and became certified in Reiki to enhance her natural healing abilities. Her unselfish determination to make life better for others was recognized in her being twice named Citizen of the Year for the City of Newmarket.
Mary Ann took great pride in the beautiful friendships that spanned her lifetime from growing up in Toronto and attending Loretto Abbey through to her years in Newmarket, Ontario and Mont Tremblant, Quebec. Always up for an adventure and rarely seen without a smile on her face, people loved to be around her.
She was fun and funny, intelligent and well read, artistic and crafty, an athlete who loved to ski and play tennis, she loved to be in the water no matter how cold it was and she loved to play piano, guitar and sing with her daughter and sisters. She was an avid bridge player, an annoyingly good scrabble player and an aggressive euchre player.
On paper, her medical conditions were overwhelming and incapacitating. Doctors found it hard to believe how great she appeared in the face of her illnesses. She repeatedly beat the odds with her optimism and smile. She managed pain by meditating and “skiing in her head.” She chose to see through the hardship and instead see and celebrate the good in every day.
Mary Ann’s positive outlook even in the face of adversity inspired everyone around her. It was her wish that we express her gratitude to the doctors and nurses at Southlake Hospital and give a special thank you to Peter Campbell, the porter at Southlake Hospital.
Friends are invited for Mary Ann’s visitation at Roadhouse & Rose Funeral Home, 157 Main St. S. in Newmarket on Friday October 14th from 1-3 pm and 7-9pm.
Mary Ann’s funeral will take place at St. Elizabeth Seton Parish, 17955 Leslie Street in Newmarket on Saturday October 15th at 1pm.
In honor of Mary Ann’s long and courageous battle with cancer, and in lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in Mary Ann’s name to the Terry Fox Foundation. Memorial donations can be made through the following link;
