With much sadness we announce the passing of Martha Caldwell Elton (Mattie to her many special friends), born in Glasgow, Scotland on Oct 27th, 1923. Besides her parents, Mattie was predeceased by her 4 sisters, Mamie, Betty, Lillian and Doreen and brothers Malcolm and John.
Mattie took classes to become a legal secretary and then at the age of only 20, she enlisted in the Women’s Armed Services to help with the war efforts for her country.
It was there she met her husband Lawrence Elton, while he was serving in the Air Force.
Married in 1947, she immigrated to Western Canada with Lawrence and dreamt of having a family here in this beautiful part of Canada.
Children came later in life for them and perhaps that’s why she loved her daughters, Heather and Susan so much! She was involved in so many activities with her girls, dance, music, arts and crafts, gardening and travelling, as well as all the outdoorsy family activities that Dad loved.
She was also a proud Brownie and Girl Guide leader, a dance competition judge and definitely her daughters biggest cheerleader.
She stayed very close with her sisters and travelled to meet them regularly in Scotland, Spain and Portugal .
In retirement Lawrence and her travelled often and continued to make memories in so many destinations.
Mattie also loved swimming, line dancing and being part of an amazing group of friends that started a knitting club in Nanoose Bay BC, which still continues today. She was also a long time volunteer for Meals on Wheels and a keen participant in many fundraisers.
She came to live in Okotoks in 2012 and loved living near her daughter Susan and adored son in law Garry.
She will be remembered for being a very loving, sweet lady who shared her kindness and friendliness with everyone she met.
Her family would like to acknowledge her special friends, Pauline, Denyse and Emmy from Calvanna Village who she loved so much. Their friendship and help enabled her to continue living in her condo on her own until very recently.
The family would also like to thank the staff at The Heartland in Okotoks for their kindness and help to her. Although her time there was far too short, she was grateful to the staff and friends that made her feel welcome .
She will be so missed and always lovingly remembered. A life well lived
At Mattie’s request there will be no funeral service but there will be a small celebration of life to be held at a later date.
Arrangements are in care of Snodgrass Funeral Homes, Okotoks 403-938-3111. To email condolences to the family, please visit www.snodgrassfuneralhomes.com
