July 1952 – October 2022
With great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Mark Malashewski at home in his sleep on October 30, 2022.
Mark was the second child and only son of Evelyn and Fred Malashewski.
Mark was predeceased by his grandparents and parents; son Ryan, and niece Kara. He is survived by his sister Sandra (Bob); and his nieces Sheralyn (Paul) and Jacalyn; and his nephew Richard, as well as three great nephews, Kaden, Ari and Adrian.
Mark grew up in Transcona and attended Westview School, Arthur Day Jr. High, Transcona and Murdock MacKay Collegiates. Following high school Mark worked up North in the mines for a short time and then returned home to apprentice for four years at the CNR Shops as a Carman. After graduation in 1976 he did welding, painting and built rail cars for many years till his retirement in 2002. It was often said that when Mark missed a day of work they needed three men to complete the same amount of work he did in a day. Mark enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycles in his younger years, even after he had a terrible accident riding with his girlfriend. When she jumped off the bike, he stayed on to save it when hitting a barricade. She ended up with a few scratches on her knees, while he almost died. If it had not been for a doctor driving behind him heroically called 911 and turned Mark’s head so he would not choke on his own blood he would not have survived.
Mark adored cats and was a proud and loving owner of many throughout his life including his current two cats, Baby and Tiny Bits. Mark will be missed by those who knew him and will always be loved for his generosity and caring nature.
“And the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.”
Ecclesiastes 12:17
As per his wishes cremation has taken place and scattering will occur with a memorial service to be held at a later date at Transcona Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers a donation to the Winnipeg Humane Society is encouraged.
Mark has not died but gone away to a better place – free of suffering.
Rest in peace brother and uncle. We love you
Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.
