Marguerite May (Zinck) Baker
Age 88 of Centre, Lunenburg County, passed away peacefully on Nov. 28, 2021 in Harbour View Haven.
She was born in Crouse’s Settlement Lunenburg Co. on March 8, 1933 to Earling Vincent and Mae Elizabeth (Weagle) Zinck.
She is survived by her daughter Vicki (Robert) Griswold, Spectacle Lakes; son Barry (Sara) Baker, Chester Basin; daughter Nicole Baker, Delaware; grandchildren Nicholas Griswold, Natasha Griswold, Paul Baker and Ben Baker. She is also survived by her sister Elva Conrad of First South as well as many nieces & nephews.
Marguerite was predeceased by her husband Gordon Baker, brothers Robert, Walton, Herbert and Harold; sisters Ruth Conrad, Eva Chandler, Barbara Zinck and Doris Zinck.
Mom grew up on a busy farmstead in Crouse’s Settlement, she said there were lots of chores but also lots of fun, but she did say that forking hay in the barn loft and trying to milk the family cow was not part of the fun. Mom was raised in a large extended family, there were lots of Aunts and Uncles along with all her brothers and sisters.
As a young woman living at home, she met the brother of her neighbour’s girlfriend and that relationship grew into marriage in 1953. Mom started her working life as a housekeeper in Lunenburg at the rate of $1 per day for a 30 day month, she didn’t like the months with 31 days. After that she worked for National Sea Products at the original Lunenburg plant and part time for Simpson Sears at their Lunenburg outlet.
Mom and Dad saved up and moved into a new home in Centre in 1959, next to her brother Herbert. In that home they raised three children and lived there for the next 62 years. As a homemaker, Mom was busy in her role as the neighbourhood hair stylist, she assisted the Centre Home & School Association lunch program, she was also very active in her church as a Sunday School teacher, with the UCW, church suppers and every other volunteer role that you can think of. Mom & her neighbours also volunteered in the community to help elders stay in their homes longer. For many years she was a neighborhood canvasser for the Heart & Stroke Foundation & Diabetes Canada.
The family would like to thank Pelham Medical, Axel Saile, Heart to Heart in Home Care, Lunenburg County Home Care, VON, the staff at SSRH, FMH and HVH for their kindness and attention
There will be a family service at the Martins Brook Cemetery at a later date.
