Sadly, we wish to announce the peaceful passing of Mae Elizabeth (Betty) Wagner on January 20th, 2022, at Humber River Hospital in Toronto in her 99th year. Betty was predeceased by her two brothers, Arthur and Russel, lifelong friends Geraldine Fisher and Shirley Hendry and she will be remembered and missed by her many nieces, nephews and grand and great grand nieces and nephews and her many friends and associates accumulated over the years. At 98 years of age, Betty’s life can best be described as a life well lived in the guidance to and service of others. Betty was born May 23, 1923, in Bridgeport, Waterloo County, Ontario. Betty was an accomplished educator and administrator and spent many years teaching, administrating, and directing for the Toronto School Board and DND schools for Canadian forces in Germany. Betty is remembered by many teachers who were seconded to teaching positions with and under Betty’s direction. Many of these educators still contact Betty and are considered friends to this day. Betty enjoyed her life in Canada and her overseas life, travelling and photographing extensively in Africa, Europe and much of the rest of the world. She also arranged and guided educational trips to Europe and Africa as well as hosted relatives to tours with her to share her extensive knowledge of culture in Europe and Africa. Many middle-aged people in Canada who are family of forces members who toured Europe know Betty well through the schools. Betty has resided at Humber Heights Retirement home for the past 9 years. There, she received excellent care from the staff and management who considered Betty as family. Caregivers were thrilled to chat with Betty about their lives and family and to hear of Betty’s travels and knowledge of past and current events. Betty was an avid reader of newspapers and books and loved to engage in discussions of politics and current events. She actively participated in bi-weekly zoom calls with relatives throughout the pandemic. She managed to avoid covid-19 and was certain to be vaccinated and she could not understand why anyone would not seek the benefit of vaccines. One of Betty’s loves was her cottage in Port Elgin where family and friends spent many joyful gatherings. She has requested her ashes be scattered in Lake Huron near that cottage site. Due to the restrictions of the pandemic, we have decided to hold a celebration of life later this spring or summer. Details to follow when possible. Betty was a charitable supporter including Toronto Public Library Foundation, The Scott Mission, Camp Trillium, The Salvation Army, and the Young Street Mission. Donations on her behalf would be a great memorial to Betty and can be made through Turner & Porter Funeral Directors Limited.
