Obituary
Madeline Plathan passed away on Saturday, July 30 at the Silverado Creek Seniors Community at the age of 96. Madeline was born in Red Deer, Alberta on October 10, 1925 and was the 5th of 6 children born to Norman and Emma Doll. Madeline was a life-long Albertan. She spent most of her earlier years in Calgary before the family moved to Stauffer. After marrying Alex in 1947, they lived in a few different towns in Central Alberta (including a stint in Calgary) before settling in Okotoks in 1965. Madeline lived in Okotoks until the summer of 2020 when she moved into Calgary.
Family was always at the centre of Madeline’s life. With the family, she was fondly known as “Pete”. Whether it was large family gatherings, attending ball games or concerts that her kids or grandkids were part of, or simply chatting over a coffee, this is when she was happiest. Madeline had a great sense of humor and was cracking one-liners right up until the last days of her life. Like many people who grew up in the Depression era, Madeline was stoic. The WWII British saying of Keep Calm and Carry On applied to Madeline. She always had to think about things before making big decisions and had a backbone of steel when necessary. Madeline was honest to the core, while being supportive and loving.
Madeline is survived by her children, Larry Plathan, Peggy Plathan, and Jim (Laura) Plathan, her grandchildren, Kyra Plathan and Ben Plathan, as well as many nieces and nephews. Madeline was predeceased by her husband Alexander Plathan and her siblings Mervin Doll, Mona Bertram, Dorothy Leavitt, Ben Doll, and Mabel Rettschlag.
A very big thank you to the staff of the Silverado Creek Seniors Community, especially the Health Care Aids and Nurses on the 3rd floor Tricklecreek wing, for the wonderful care you provided to Madeline during her last 10 months of life. She had the best quality of life possible while at Silverado Creek and we are eternally grateful for your care and support.
As per Madeline’s wishes, there will not be a service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Madeline’s honor may be made directly to a charity of your choice.
