Mable Ilena Robar 2022

Mable’s Obituary
Mable Ilena (Hiltz) Robar, age 98, long-time resident of Aylesford, passed away peacefully at Heart of the Valley Long-Term Care, Middleton on Monday morning, December 26, 2022. Born February 19, 1924, in the Forties Settlement, Lunenburg Co., she was the last surviving member of the family of the late Roderick Lee and Ethel Adelia (Bezanson) Hiltz. Mable attended The Forties Community School until Grade 10 when the Second World War intervened, and every available person was called upon to serve in one capacity or another. Mable moved to the Valley and worked as a maid for Dr. and Mrs. C.S. Bezanson. She was employed at various food processing facilities in the Aylesford area, including cranberry planting and production and the canning and evaporation of apples and other fruits and vegetables. In the late 1940s, she began work as a telephone operator at Aylesford, eventually serving as Chief Operator for 14 years. Mable met Arnold Robar not long after she came to Aylesford. They were married in 1951 and had two daughters together, Dawn Colleen and Twila Lee. When the Aylesford telephone exchange was changed over to a dial system, Mable chose to be a ‘stay at home mom’, but once Dawn and Twila started high school, she went back to work, employed first at Enserink’s Nursery as a greenhouse technician and then as a postal clerk for Canada Post in Aylesford from where she retired in 1992. When Arnold retired after 39 years with the telephone company, Mable and Arnold enjoyed working on their hobby farm, gardening, traveling and spending time at the family summer cottage at Donnellan’s Brook on the Bay of Fundy shore. After he and Mable celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary October 30, 2002, Arnold passed away suddenly on Mother’s Day, May 11, 2003. Mable remained in their Aylesford home and adjusted well to the changes and added responsibilities of living alone. Dawn and Twila both lived relatively close and were able to give Mable the attention and assistance that allowed her to remain at home. She and her elder daughter Dawn traveled several times to Europe, enjoying castles, gardens and historic landscapes in Ireland, Scotland, England, Holland, and Belgium. In 2009 Mable, daughters Dawn and Twila and son-in-law John took a family trip to Ireland, which was greatly enjoyed. The last few years of her life, Mable increasingly suffered the effects of age-related dementia, but always insisted life had been good to her. She entered Heart of the Valley Long-Term Care in March of 2020 and was well cared for by the Heart of the Valley staff. Mable was a long-time member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Auburn, and was happy to serve in many aspects of church life – altar guild, organizing suppers and teas, sewing church linens, and visiting the sick and shut ins. She was also a volunteer canvasser for the Cancer Society, the Red Cross and other organizations. She had a wonderful personality, a winning smile and a twinkle in her eye that gained her many friends. Mable is survived by her daughter, Twila Robar-DeCoste and son-in-law John DeCoste, Aylesford, and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Arnold St. Clair Robar; her elder daughter, Dawn Robar (in June of 2022); her son-in-law, Brian Webster; sisters Harriet Keddy, Elva Keddy, Viola Hiltz, Annie Hiltz, and Vena Hiltz; brothers Boyd Hiltz, Stanley (Hop) Hiltz, Reginald Hiltz, Basil Hiltz, James Hiltz, and Irvine Hiltz. There will be no public visitation by request. Mable requested both a ‘green burial’ and an internment at sunset. In accordance with her wishes, interment will take place at St. Mary’s Anglican Cemetery, 20 Morden Road, Auburn, on Thursday, December 29, 2022 at 4:00 p.m., followed by a funeral eucharist at St. Mary’s Anglican Church with Rev. Canon Lynn Uzans presiding. Family flowers only. Donations in Mable’s memory may be made to St. Mary’s Anglican Church. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, toll free 1-855-825-3448. Online guest book may be singed by visiting: www.middletonfuneralhome.com
