Obituary
Lucy Patten (Hickman) Woodland
April 26, 1917 – February 16, 2022
Promoted to Glory on Wednesday, February 16, 2022! Lucy Patten (Hickman) Woodland passed away peacefully at the Glenbrook Lodge, St. John’s, in the presence of her family, at the age of 104.
A long life, well lived!
Born in Grand Bank, Newfoundland on April 26, 1917 to Mary Anne and Charles Hickman, Lucy was the youngest of five children.
In 1936 Lucy travelled on the passenger and freight ferry, SS Sagona, from Grand Bank to St. John’s to “take” her grade 11 and go to Summer school to get a teaching certificate. Lucy’s teaching career spanned 40 years, beginning in September 1937 on Change Islands and finishing in St.John’s in 1977. In 1938 Lucy taught at Hickman’s Harbour, Random Island. Lucy returned to St. John’s in 1939 and taught at the Salvation Army College, Springdale Street for two years. In 1941 she took a teaching position in Grand Bank where she met the new school principal, Gordon Woodland. Lucy and Gordon were married on June 24, 1943. They had two children, Keith and Rhodie Anne.
Lucy was blessed with a long and healthy life. A Salvationist and a woman of strong faith, Lucy was a faithful member of the Home League (Women’s Ministries) and other Corps activities. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, board games, word puzzles, brain teasers and Sudoku. Lucy loved to play Rook. Her passion for sports started as a child in Grand Bank where she jumped fences and played “whatever was on the go”. In retirement Lucy was an avid traveller. She lived independently until 2013 when she moved to Glenbrook Lodge. There she participated in all outings, especially the shopping trips, recreation and craft activities. Lucy so enjoyed the Chapel services.
Left with fond and loving memories are her children, Keith Woodland and Rhodie Anne Woodland; her sisters-in-law, Rhoda Reid (Stan, deceased) and Edith Woodland; her nieces, Major Anne Noseworthy (Hayward, deceased), Georgie Rowsell (Max), Rose Blagdon (Bill) and Doris Witherall; and her nephews, Clarence Forsey, Fred Witherall (Mabel), Maurice Witherall (Beatrice) and Gordon Witherall (Emily, deceased). Lucy is also lovingly remembered by generations of other nieces and nephews and a large circle of family and friends.
Predeceased by her husband, Gordon J. Woodland (1917-1977); her parents, Mary Anne (1881-1955) and Charles Hickman (1881-1917); her siblings, Alice (Jos Forsey), Clarence Hickman (Carrie), Bella Hickman and Edith-May (Frank Witherall); her nephews, Charlie Forsey (Ernie) and Max Witherall; Gordon’s parents, Majors Charles and Sarah Woodland; Gordon’s siblings, Wilmore (Maria), Bruce, Major Alma, Cora and Renee Woodland.
Thank you to the retired and current Glenbrook Lodge team of nursing staff and support services as well as the interdisciplinary teams who made Mom’s time at the Glenbrook Lodge so enjoyable. A special note of thanks to the Chaplains at Glenbrook Lodge who comforted Mom in her time of need. Your consideration and generosity will never be forgotten.
Visitation will take place at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue, St. John’s on Saturday, February 19 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. A service to celebrate Lucy’s life will take place at 3:00 p.m. Sunday February 20 at The Salvation Army St. John’s Temple, Torbay Road. To attend this service in person, Vaccination Passports and masks are required. The service will also be live-streamed on the Salvation Army St. John’s Temple Facebook page. Interment to follow at the Salvation Army Cemetery, Blackmarsh Road.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Lucy’s memory may be made to either the Salvation Army St. John’s Temple Youth Ministries, P.O. Box 21060, 101 Torbay Rd. St. John’s, A1A 5B2 or to the Salvation Army St. John’s Food Bank, c/o The Salvation Army Ches Penney Centre of Hope at 18 Springdale Street, St. John’s, A1E 2R1.
But until then my heart will go on singing,
Until then with joy I’ll carry on,
Until the day my eyes behold the city,
Until the day God calls me home.
