Lillina Silvana Pagnottella (De Iuliis)
June 30, 1936 – February 3, 2022
It is with great sadness that the family of Lillina Silvana Pagnottella (De Iuliis) announce her passing on February 3, 2022. Lillina, known by her friends and family as “Silvana”, was born in Castellalto, Italy on June 30, 1936 to parents Franco De Iuliis and Maria Adelina Melchiorre. In 1959, Lillina immigrated to Canada with her husband, Giovanni, to begin their life here in Halifax. It was here that Lillina became a part of the large Italian community which brought her so many lasting friendships and fond memories.
Lillina loved to knit, crochet and embroider and so, for many of her younger years, she was seen with knitting needles in-hand making slippers, scarves, and blankets for everyone she knew. She would often take day trips to the valley, where she would return with a car full of peppers and tomatoes to prepare and jar for her family and friends. Her home was filled with flourishing plants of every kind and she tended to her gardens with such care and pride. No matter where she was, if there were flowers, she would stop to smell them.
For a short while, Lillina worked at Fairview Villa where she took on a variety of roles. Following that, she ran a home day care for many years. She adored small children and cared for them as if they were her own. Her great granddaughter, Mia, brought her so much happiness in the final years of her life. Lillina’s nurturing and caring disposition carried though every aspect of her life.
Lillina will be remembered by many for her soft singing voice, her vibrant story-telling, and her kitchen full of bread, sauces and sweets. No one ever left her house empty-handed.
She is survived by her two loving sons Pino (Antonietta) and Italo; her dear sister Nicoletta; brother-in laws Umberto (Clara) and Cesare; sister in-laws Sophia and Angela; her grandchildren Alessandra (Pierre), Giovanni (Kelly), Adrianna (Daniel) and Alessia; and her absolute joy, great-granddaughter Mia. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews in both Canada and Italy and her fur baby, Zoe. Lillina was predeceased by her beloved husband, Giovanni; sisters Loretta, Secondina and Amina; and brothers Antonio and Michele.
A visitation will take place at the Dartmouth Funeral Home, 29 Queen Street, on Tuesday, February 8th from 7-8pm. A private family funeral will take place after which, Lillina will be laid to rest alongside her husband in Italy. A recording of the funeral will be available on the Good Shepherd Parish St. Agnes & St. Thomas Aquinas Facebook page.
