Obituary for
Lillian MacLeod (Winters)
Lillian MacLeod
1926 – 2022
Our beloved matriarch, Lillian (Winters) MacLeod, chose to depart her earthly life on May 5, 2022, at the age of 95. She is remembered with love and sadness by her children Ron (Marie), Jim (Susan), Alex (Louise) and Sharon; her grandchildren Dan (Ashley), Shaunna (Peter) and Damon (Mandy); and her great-grandchildren Amelia and Alexander Vyletel and Asher and Tamoh MacLeod. Lillian was predeceased by her youngest child, Mark, in 1985, and her husband, Bruce, in 1991. Lillian was born at home on Post Road, close to Long Sault, on June 5, 1926. She was the fifth of Emily Ada (née Ross) and Heber Winters’s nine children. As a farm girl, Lillian helped out with a host of chores, including milking, gardening, laundry, cooking, canning, housekeeping and minding the little ones. Despite her busy life, Lillian was a happy child who loved baking cakes, riding horses and sharing a good laugh with her sisters. At the age of 16, Lillian got a job at the paper mill in Mille Roches. She saved her money and was soon able to buy her first car, a black Ford with a rumble seat. In 1949, Lillian left her job (and sold her car!) when she married Bruce MacLeod. After honeymooning in Niagara Falls, the young couple settled on the MacLeod family farm at Goldfield. Lillian was thrust into a busy life as a farm wife, mother and homemaker. She was a tireless worker, renowned for her cooking skills, her pristine home (God help any flies that dared to enter), her glorious flower beds and her limitless devotion to her family’s well-being. Lillian was a brave and powerful woman who dealt with tragedy and illness during her long life. The loss of her youngest son, when he was only 23, was a crushing blow. And when her dear husband, Bruce, died, it took all her strength to move to Ingleside and begin a new life on her own. In her later years, Lillian confronted serious health issues and the heartbreak of losing numerous family members and friends. But she always overcame each difficult challenge. What choice did she have? She loved her children, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren. She loved life. She loved laughter. And she never wanted to say goodbye. At Lillian’s request, her remains will be cremated and there will be no funeral. Those who wish to do so may make a donation in Lillian’s memory to Winchester Hospital or to Diabetes Canada. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Lillian’s life at a brief service at Finch Cemetery on Saturday, June 25, 2022, at 11:00 a.m.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Lillian
