It is with heavy hearts that the family of Len Jones announces his peaceful passing
on July 12, 2022, at the age of 87 years, just shy of his 88 th birthday on Aug. 1.
Len will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his children: Philip, Gillian
(Grant), Michael (Nicole); his grandchildren: David (Balie), Amanda (Jeremy),
Ashley (Eric), Darcy (Greg), Natasha, Kaitlyn, Kyle, Katherine, and Connor. As well
as his great-grandchildren: Ridge, Slate, Oakdon, Grayson, Violet, and Lachlan.
He was predeceased by his loving wife Carol and his son Derek, his parents George
and Gladys, his siblings Marjorie, Sid, Eva, and Ethel. He also leaves to mourn his
stepsister Barbara, his brother-in-law Mike, sister-in-law Helen and many nieces
and nephews and their families in England.
Len was born in Liverpool, England in 1934. He served in the British Army from
1951-56 and was stationed in the Middle East and Kenya. Following his discharge
with the rank of Sargent, he worked as an officer in the British Corrections Service.
He then sailed as a crew member of the Empress of England cruise line from 1960-
1966 which allowed him to see many parts of the world. The family emigrated to
Canada in 1966 and settled in Calgary where Len worked in the corrections system.
In 1969 Len and the family transferred to Peace River where they became involved
in the Peace River community and region. They then moved to St. Albert when he
was appointed to the AUPE executive as their Chief Negotiator. Len was an active
community member and served as the President of the St. Albert Legion for two
terms – 1979, 1983, as well as Commander for Zone 6 in 1993. He was integral in
the creation of the Legion Memorial Ballpark in St. Albert. He and former mayor
Fowler threw out the first pitch to officially open the ball diamonds. His interests
included golfing, raising, and breeding budgies, gardening and he was an avid
reader. Len loved visiting with his family, seeing his grandchildren and great-
grandchildren. He was an avid Liverpool Football Club fan and watched every
game.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at the St. Albert
Legion, 6 Taché Street on July 29 at 2:00 p.m.
