Obituary of Leona Doubleday
Doubleday (Hart), Leona Lorraine.
It is with deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother. Leona Lorraine Doubleday (Hart) passed away peacefully on Friday, January 21st, 2022, at the QEII hospital in Halifax at the age of 77. Leona was born in Sambro, NS, but lived in Herring Cove for the majority of her life with her husband and life partner of 62 years.
Leona was predeceased by her mother and father, Lyle and Alfreda Hart (Hart), brothers John, James, and Harvey Hart, and sisters Theora Harnish, Una Weagle, Avadna Bookholt, and Diana Harnish, as well as two sisters in infancy. Leona was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was also predeceased by her grandson, Brennan Richardson.
Left with fond memories of Leona are her husband, Carl, her son, Patrick Doubleday (Elizabeth), her daughter Carol Richardson (John), grandchildren Tyler Doubleday (Jen), Jennifer Doubleday (Kyle), and Hilary Richardson-Murphy (Justin). She is also survived by her great-grandson, Theodore Doubleday, whom she loved and adored. Leona also leaves behind her great-grandchild on-the-way, news that helped keep her so positive in her last days with us. Leona will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Leona had many hobbies, interests, and things that she loved. The most important of those were her grandchildren. Leona’s grandchildren were her whole world and she loved to spoil them whenever she could. She always looked forward to their visits. Leona loved to knit and made countless handmade dishcloths, ornaments, and other crafts. Leona loved to bake, and her love of baking was a huge part of her life, such as making pies for church suppers (which were crowd favourites), ladies guild meetings, and for her husband and family, especially making homemade birthday cakes. She was always trying out new recipes. One of the ways she bonded with others was through this love of baking and passed this down to her family. Leona loved camping. She and her family went on many adventures together and loved to spend time at their camps in Bridgewater and Walton. On their many family trips, you could often find Leona swinging on a set of swings with a giant smile on her face, followed by a meal at a local restaurant. Leona loved dogs. She and her husband had many dogs over the years, but a few special pups, Boomer, Snuggles and Princess, stole her heart. After losing her own fur-babies, she formed an extra-special bond with her daughter’s dog, Dakota. Dakota accompanied Leona and Carl on many drives to Bridgewater, a time all three loved and cherished together.
Leona was an incredible mother, grandmother, friend, and more. Her kindness, generosity, and love in our life will be irreplaceable, but her light will continue to shine through all who knew and loved her. Leona will be so dearly missed and our memories of our mom and nanny will live on forever.
The family sends a very sincere thank you to all of the doctors, nurses, and healthcare staff at the QEII who provided care for Leona while she was in hospital, especially those in the emergency department and 3IMCU.
Due to covid-19 restrictions, a funeral service and internment at St. James Anglican Church, Herring Cove will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Leona can be made to St. James Anglican Church, in Herring Cove.
Condolences and memories can be left on the “Tribute Wall” located in the sidebar.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Leona
