Obituary
It is with heavy hearts the family announces the passing of Leo Kuntz, who lived a full life to the age of 93.
Leo was born and raised in Fairview, Alberta. In which he carried out 93 years of working, farming, raising a family and enjoying the little things in life.
His younger years were spent on the farm at Friedenstal and working in town for W.P. Loggie in his store. For many years, he owned and farmed land in Donnelly with his father-in law Bill Arnold. Additionally, Leo spent 21 years hauling fuel and serving farmers for Dunc Fentie’s UFA. His radio call sign was “Maple Leaf 2”. After years of hauling fuel Leo began working in maintenance at the Fairview Hospital until he retired in 1995.
Leo was a member of the Knights of Columbus for most of his life and served as Grand Knight. In his younger days he was involved in playing and coaching fastball, which is how he met his wife Vera in April of 1959. Later that year they were happily married.
Once he retired, he spent a lot of time at home, and evenings were spent driving the countryside, looking for deer, checking out the crops, and just enjoying the views.
After the passing of his loving wife Vera in 2013, he had to learn a lot of new tasks, and he always enjoyed keeping busy. Leo turned into a gardener, bread baker, a master of canning pickles, carrots, and was the top lunch spot for his daughter, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. His great grandchildren could never leave his house without being offered a box of cookies, beef jerky, cheezies, or a few bucks. Most of his time was spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, foot races, arm wrestling, old stories, and always had a bowl of jello made, or some kind of treat. Attending school events, hockey games, popping over just to keep tabs on everyone, and endless phone calls just to tell a joke, or check in.
Leo’s memory was second to none. He could tell you who owned every farm and building in the area from 1939 to present. He knew almost everyone in the area, including their parents and grandparents. If you needed a history lesson, he was the man to ask. And he was correct every time. He could sing in German, but not in English, which always made Christmas carols interesting.
At 92 years old, Leo decided he was tired of his own cooking, and sold his house and moved into the Harvest Lodge. A few months ago, he moved into the Fairview Nursing Home where he peacefully passed away near midnight on October 21, 2022.
Leo was predeceased by his wife Vera, his daughter Katherine, his parents Cornelius and Anna, his brothers Joe, Buster and John, sisters Agathe, Katherine and Madeline.
He is survived by his son Randy (Heather) Kuntz, daughter Connie (Kelvin) Heck, grandchildren Kristi, Kimberley, Kolton, John, Torie, Sarah, James, and great grandchildren Tyren, Hunter, Daxten, Kohen, Kaysen, brother Peter Miller and numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be no service at Leo’s request. He will be laid to rest at the Friedenstal Cemetery.
