Leah “Viola” Mercer nee (LeGrow)
Passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre in Sudbury, Ontario on October 27, 2022, with her loving family by her side. She was 86.
Born August 10, 1936 in Bauline, Newfoundland to Adeline and Soloman LeGrow both predeceased.
The matriarch of our family; Viola Mercer, married the love of her life, Howard Mercer, predeceased 2019 on March 23, 1956. They had four children; Christopher Mercer (Hope), John “Tony” Mercer predeceased 2009 (Kimberly), Scott Mercer (Shelley), Best Friend and Daughter ~ Leah-Jo Mercer-Sbrega (Thomas Sbrega). Grandchildren; Tanis, Sydney Statulevicius (Kai), Ben Digby, Trisha Owens, Cory (Samantha), Cassandra, Erica, Jessica-Lea (Mat Houle) Kary-Lynn (Jake Therrien), Alex Poliquin, Niko Sbrega (Kelsey Huffman), Cooper Sbrega (Brittni Rorison) and Great Grandchildren; Auguste-Elle and Atlas Statulevicius, Charlie-Jo Houle, Carter Mercer and Gavin Therrien.
Viola and Howard moved to Sudbury from St. John’s, Newfoundland in 1963, with little means and 3 young sons in tow. Viola and Howard were not only soul mates but they were partners. Partners in marriage and family and partners in business. In 1971 they started Superior Auto Collision where Viola controlled the business and worked side by side with Howard for 25 years. That small business flourished into a Family owned and operated business that is now owned and operated by Chris and Leah-Jo and Krown North owned and operated by Scott. After retirement, the two were inseparable. They travelled far and wide and at least once a year they would get back to see family in Newfoundland. In the final days you could hear Viola say; I am grateful, I had a great life and I have no regrets. Viola was a true lady and her legacy lives on in her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She may be gone but never forgotten.
Siblings Florence King (Alton predeceased), Jean Hill (David predeceased), Joyce LeGrow, Vera Kirby (Fred) both predeceased, Phyllis Thorne (Clayton), Cecil LeGrow (Doris), Melvin LeGrow predeceased (Irene), Dexter LeGrow (Margaret predeceased), Grenvil LeGrow (Debbie), Leonard LeGrow predeceased and Gerald LeGrow predeceased.
Sister-in-law to Fredris Caines (Stan predeceased) and Blaine Mercer.
The Family would like to thank all the wonderful care that she received, during her time of need. From her family physician Dr. Critchton, All the staff at HSN 6th South and the ever caring staff at St. Joeseph’s Continuing Care Centre. Dr. Monique St. Martin, Nurses; Donna, Rene and Nathalie and to anyone else not mentioned. Thank You from the bottom of our hearts.
At Viola’s request there will be no visitation or funeral. There will be a private celebration of her life at a later date. In lieu of flowers a donation to St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre would be appreciated.
