Obituary
It is with profound sadness that the family of Lawrence Chua share that he passed away on April 7th of this year. He was only 60 years old. There is some solace in knowing that when he left us he was among those who loved him, in a place that he loved.
Born October 12th, 1961, in Singapore, his family immigrated to Canada and settled in Port Alberni in 1967. Lawrence thrived in that small, tight knit community and developed a real love for the outdoors. By the time he graduated from Alberni Senior Secondary School in 1979, he had a large, diverse circle of friends, many of whom remained close to him through his life.
After attending what was then Malaspina College in Nanaimo, Lawrence followed his passion into the Hospitality Industry where he carved out a successful career while building an incredible community around him.
It was rare if Lawrence ever lost a music trivia night – music was part of who he was. To say he was an avid fisherman is an understatement – “Some go to church and think about fishing, others go fishing and think about God.” – that was Lawrence.
All those who were lucky enough to know him, knew a man who was fun, funny, smart, loyal, and most of all, knew that you mattered, and he stood up for people, especially those who couldn’t stand up for themselves.
He will be forever remembered by his son Brandon (Isabelle), his parents Rosalind and Ronald, his sister Karen (Joe) nieces Maija, Bella and nephews Luke and Matteo, close friend Peggy as well as aunts, uncles, and cousins all over Canada and Singapore.
His absence will be felt by his Longwood Brew Pub family, his Group of Seven brothers and a large community of friends all over the island.
We were blessed to know him, blessed to call him a friend, blessed to share a deep, mutual, love and respect, the kind that only comes from the depths of the soul.
He is gone far too soon… he is dearly missed.
Please join us in honoring the life of Lawrence Chua on Saturday, April 30th. That afternoon, a Catholic Funeral Mass as well as a Celebration of Life will both be held.
All are welcome.
The Mass will be held at 1pm at Trinity Catholic, located at 6234 Spartan Road.
The Celebration will be held at the Curling Club in Nanaimo from 3:30 to 6:30 PM, located at 106 Wall St., near Bowen Park.
