O’CONNOR, Marie Laurette
July 19, 1924 – September 22, 2022
With immense sadness and hearts full of gratitude for the gift of her life with us, the family of (Marie) Laurette O’Connor (nee Brault) announces her death on September 22, 2022. Mom lived a long and blessed life celebrating 98 birthdays. Her upbringing was rooted in the Catholic tradition in which she and dad raised us all as active members of St. Andrew’s and Holy Spirit parishes. We especially thank our mother for our formation into Christian values of loving service which we continue to witness through our own loving commitment to our families and the communities we live and work in. Mom, may you rest in the peace of Jesus our Lord for your life commitment to Christian witness and service.
Laurette is survived by 8 of her ten children: Bernadette O’Connor (Jim Adamson), Brenda Chaplin, Len (Carol) O’Connor, Denis (Susan Boyd) O’Connor, Pat O’Connor (Phyllis Dirom), Barbara O’Connor, Mark (Wanda) O’Connor, Martin O’Connor; 12 grandchildren (Simon, Sheena (Denis Hache), Andrew (Siobhan McKaigney) and Liam Adamson, Darylle (Chris) Shudra, Ashley (Jeff) Bajema, Justin & Dillon O’Connor, Aaron & Rebecca Ferrao, Dellice (Allison) Saxby, and Jessica (Jamie) Spence; 9 great-grandchildren (Eva, Felix; Madden, Patten, Wyatt; Blake, Ryker; Noa and Sullivan), son-in-law Don Cummings, two sisters, Theresa Kallal & Ruth Wiber, sister-in-law Linda-Ann Sterling, numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.
She is predeceased by her husband Bernie of 57 years and two children, daughters Baby Barbara and Terry Cummings as well as her siblings, Alberta Brault, Lucien (Bernadette) Brault, Sam (Mary) Brault, Albert (Dorothy) Brault, Madeleine (Cliff) Pierce, Rollande (Claude) Eccles, and in-laws William Kallal, John Wiber, Leo O’Connor, Maureen O’Connor, Des (Marie) O’Connor.
There were few who did not refer to Laurette as “mom”. She always had her kitchen and home open to visitors, traveling salesman dad brought home for lunch, or stragglers of various sorts. There was always a delicious home cooked meal and if you were lucky, bread and cinnamon buns as well. Her approach to life and many of her domestic skills were learned under the tutelage of her mother, Beatrice Brault, growing up in a family of 12. Prior to marriage and children, Laurette assisted her mother, the Tawatinaw Postmistress, and worked in the Edmonton CWL office. Mom’s expertise as a “domestic engineer” was a gift to us all whether she was running the home, coordinating support of her children’s many activities as cheerleader and chauffeur, or receiving the gifts of her warm crocheted blankets.
A Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 a.m. on Friday September 30, 2022, at St Andrew’s Catholic Church, Edmonton, AB, with viewing one hour prior. After the Mass, please join the family for a luncheon and a time of fellowship. Interment will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday October 1, 2022 at Holy Cross Cemetery, 14611 Mark Messier Trail, Edmonton, AB.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Winifred Stewart Society, Community Lamda, Schizophrenia Society of Alberta, or a charity of one’s choice in Laurette’s memory. The family sends a special thank you to the staff at Michener Hill Extendicare, Red Deer. Your caring and support for mom will always be remembered.
