Larry Phipps, Age 71 of Powder Springs TN passed peacefully in his home on February 10th. Mr. Phipps was preceded in death by his father Charles Phipps; grandmother and grandfather, Grace and John Phipps; grandmother and grandfather, Martha and Earl Needham; and faithful steed, Red Man’s Flame (also known as Ziggy). Larry is survived by his wife of 52-years, Judy Phipps; son and daughter-in-law Jonathan and Jada Phipps; grandson, Ryker Phipps; Brother Doug; mother, Francis Louise Phipps; mother-in-law, Francis Mardell Brewer of Tazewell;
Since childhood, Larry had a kinship with horses, and achieved great renown as both a member of the American Quarter Horse Association and as a founding member of the National Barrel Horse Association in the sport of barrel racing. In his later years, Larry became an active member of Johnson’s Chapel Freewill Baptist Church and spent many hours serving in the community food pantry with his wife Judy. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the Offices of the Hanna Cancer Associates and Dr. Bruce E. Woodworth for their kindness and care during his struggle with bladder cancer. Finally, those who wish may make a memorial donation to Alzheimer’s Tennessee in lieu of flowers.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm on Monday, February 14, with services to follow immediately after. Larry will be interred during a graveside ceremony at the Doyle Wayne Needham Cemetery in Powder Springs on Tuesday, February 15th at 11 am.
