The early years
Kim was born at the Montreal General Hospital on May 16, 1957 to parents, Enid Frances Davidson, and Alastair Donald Campbell Robertson. She was raised in Senneville, on the west island of Montreal, Quebec with her 3 older siblings Leigh, Jane, and Gael. At the age of 10 new neighbours moved in, “The Stratfords”, and one of the daughters, Catherine soon became Kim’s best friend, and their lifelong friendship has been steadfast. The Robertson family enjoyed their adventurous summer vacations to Nova Scotia, camping along the way, and staying at “The Buckaneer” in East Chester. In 1965, her parents bought “The Farm” on the 2nd Concession in Elgin, a beautiful stone farmhouse built in the early 19th century. She remembers scurrying around their home in Senneville, packing picnics and getting ready to head out for weekends in the country.
Life in Elgin
Kim met her husband, Perry, in Elgin when she was just 16. What started out as a friendship became true love a few years later, the kind of love that is nothing short of admirable – something so many of us only dream of. They married in Senneville, at Kim’s maternal grandparents’ home “19 Elmwood”. A small intimate affair between Christmas and New Years, December 28, 1978 – Kim 21, and Perry 24. They lived in Scranton, Pennsylvania; Manchester, New Hampshire; and Vancouver, Washington before returning to Elgin, Quebec. They lived in a few homes in Elgin before purchasing and setting down roots on the 3rd Concession – at the “Lanktree” farm. They moved there in spring of 1986 when their eldest, son Justin was 5, and daughter Ellie was 2. Later that year, their youngest daughter Gillian was born. Perry renovated the old farmhouse over the years, and it became nothing short of a cozy, loving home, filling up with memories as the years went on.
Gardens, chickens, sheep, cows, dogs, cats, birds, baking, cooking were elements of this home – Kim loved her family, her animals, her friends, neighbours, and her community, and she showed her love in many ways. She showed her love through the food she made for family dinners, holiday parties, dinners with friends, after school snacks, and everything she made by hand for over 17 years at her bakery, “La Petite Boulangerie d’Elgin”. She showed her love for her community with the restoration and arts project at Kelso Hall in Elgin. Alongside friends, family, and other volunteers, Kim spearheaded and ran an annual calendar of cultural events at the old Elgin Church for 13 years, dedicating her time with passion to fundraise money to restore and save the building, to preserve Elgin’s history for future generations.
Her family meant everything to her. She loved her parents Enid and Bob, “mummy” and “daddy” and her aunt Rhoda Davidson, spending time with them whenever possible, and caring for them faithfully in their later years. She enjoyed phone chats with her three siblings who all moved to Nova Scotia as young adults – and relished visiting them and their children (Kim’s nephews and niece) in their homes; Leigh, and his son Sean in Chester, NS; Jane (and wife Susan) in West Branch, NS; and Gael, and her children Jesse and Sadie in Crousetown, NS. When the Nova Scotian clan visited Elgin for Christmases, Thanksgivings, Summer Vacations – it was always a marathon of laughter, tea, food, and carrying on.
Kim loved to watch her family expand, and was delighted with her son, Justin’s marriage to Sarah Tully, in summer of 2011; she loved her daughter in-law and treated her like family from the start. Kim was close with all her grandchildren, whom she adored. She took much pleasure in making them treats, doing activities with them, shopping for their presents, and going on adventures with them to places like Lake Placid, Maine, Upper Canada Village, the Train Museum just outside of Montreal, to name a few. Dresdon, 12 (Ellie’s son), Caleb, 9, Avery and Lyla, 6 (Justin & Sarah’s children), and Dahlia, 2 (Gillian’s daughter). She equally loved and doted over the children of her niece Sadie (husband Bruce) Eamon 10, and Enid 6, and of her nephew Sean (wife Dayna) Liam 9, and Isla 6.
She loved life, she loved having fun, and she sure knew how to laugh. And the person who could make her laugh the most was her husband, Perry. Over the years their extraordinary bond prevailed. They weren’t just husband and wife, they were best friends. Their countless adventures, road trips, camping trips, museum visits are things they enjoyed most. Happiest together, and surrounded by family. It’s as if they invented the word “together” because they were together through it all for over 46 years. A connection that may be tested, but will never fail or fade.
Kim touched so many. Her light, energy and love will be all around us and in all our hearts forever.
