We are deeply saddened to announce the sudden passing of Kenneth ‘George’ Fillis, of Chapel Cove, NS at the QEII, Halifax NS on Aug 9th 2022. George struggled with various health issues over the last number of years which he faced head on with strength and determination.
George will be missed dearly by his wife, Charmaine; son, Colby (Megan), Rocky Bay NS; grandchildren Jackson, & Mila; brother, Wayne (Joanne) Dartmouth NS; sister, Eileen, Halifax NS; brothers-in-law, Steve (Anne Marie) & Roger, both of Rockdale NS; sister-in-law Charlene (Shawn), Port Hawkesbury, NS; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
George was predeceased by his parents, Sylvia & Kenneth Fillis; brothers, Danny, and Troy; mother & father-in-law, Beatrice and John Martell; sister-in-law, Carolyn Martell.
Born and raised in Halifax, George’s love for Cape Breton was established early on by spending his summers there with his grandparents; where he later decided he wanted to stay full time. It was here that he made a home and career for himself after meeting the love of his life, his wife Charmaine.
George was an accomplished and talented carpenter, working with the Carpenters Union Local 1588, a seasoned lobster fisherman, as well as being the true definition of a jack of all trades. George was the first to offer a helping hand and often made difficult tasks look easy due to his impeccable memory. This also attributed to his precise joke telling skills; as he could often be relied upon to entertain friends and family with a joke or two or many.
An avid Bruins fan, he would often be seen sporting their logo with pride. While he had much to be proud of in his life, his greatest accomplishment by far was his son Colby, and his two grandchildren that he never missed the opportunity to share photos of. George was a passionate car enthusiast which he adoringly passed on to his son, and his grandson as demonstrated by the recent purchase of Jacksons prized race car bed. “Papa” as Jackson affectionately called him would often have a new dinky for them to admire and play with together, needless to say Jackson was Papa’s biggest fan.
A special thanks to his team of doctors, and especially to the dialysis nurses at Strait Richmond, and Cape Breton Regional Hospitals. The family would like to extend a heartfelt appreciation to Glenn, Nadine, Lorne, Jenny & Steve for their help and support. We would also like to acknowledge the outpouring of support that our wonderful community has shown us during this difficult time.
George will be remembered by his kind heart, and affectionate smile and we encourage everyone that knew him to offer a random act of kindness in his memory.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday Sept 3rd at 1:00pm, at 618 Highway 247, Grand Greve, NS.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Diabetes & Kidney Foundations.
