Obituary
Katherine MacLean
Shenacadie
It is with sadness we announce the passing of our dear sister, aunt and friend, Katherine Lucy MacLean, age 84, on Tuesday, October 18, 2022 at Seaview Manor in Glace Bay.
Born in Shenacadie, Cape Breton on May 28, 1938, Katherine was the daughter of the late John and Flora (MacKinnon) MacLean. She was a graduate of St. F.X. and went on to teach school in Sydney, Antigonish and Sydney Mines Jr. High, retiring in 1993. Katherine was a junior high school teacher who loved her students, and they loved her. The janitor of the school in Antigonish said she “was a beautiful soul.” and that she was! She was stricken with colon cancer early in her retirement. However, she accepted it and it led to her instructing students at the Community College on procedures for looking after an ostomy. She attended and spoke at cancer rallies promoting the care of ostomies. She helped Cancer Canada through telephone contact with patients all across Canada dealing with colon cancer. She brought humor into the picture by calling her ostomy “Oscar” She took two cruises, one to Amsterdam, and another to Russia. She had Oscar with her and proved to people who had colon cancer that they could still live a very active life. Even during the last few years, she was a teacher; she helped train the nurses who cared for her at the long-term care facility on how to care for an ostomy. The family wish to thank the staff at Seaview Manor, Glace Bay, for their kindness and compassionate care of Katherine.
She was a member of St. Barra’s Church, Christmas Island where she served on several committees including Lector, Eucharistic Minister and Hospitality. She was a volunteer for the Cape Breton Cancer Center, Trainer/volunteer for the Ostomy Association of Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Chapter. Katherine loved to travel to many parts of the world.
Katherine is survived by her sisters Theresa Musgrave, Balls Creek, Ann MacNeil, Shenacadie, her brother John Andrew “Buddy” MacLean, Shenacadie; also her nephews Earl (Marie), Frankie (Marly), Danny, Lorne, Ricky Musgrave; nieces Lynn (Gerard) MacKenzie, Judy (Arthur) Vaters, Julie Musgrave, Florence (Beau) Chaisson, and her good friend Patricia Paul, Halifax.
Besides her parents, Katherine was predeceased by her sister Marilyn MacLean, brothers-in-law John Hugh MacNeil and Danny Musgrave; sister-in-law Cassie MacLean, and her niece Tracey.
