Obituary
Dianne Nickerson, 75, died on April 4th, 2022 at Victoria Hospice in Victoria, BC, after a year-long battle with cancer.
Born in Shelburne, NS on March 21, 1947, Dianne was the first child of the late Cleveland “Cleve” and Virginia “Skippy” (Atwood) Nickerson, of Centreville, NS.
She went to work in the mid-70s as a single mother and was a customer service representative with Nova Scotia Power for 20 years in Barrington Passage, Chester, and Bridgewater. After this career, she returned to school for hairdressing—a long-time passion—and pursued it both in her own shop and at others in Chester and Halifax.
In 2008, having had enough of Nova Scotia winters, Dianne moved to Victoria. Here, she loved exploring on foot the scenic streets and beaches of Oak Bay and the rest of the city, taking photographs. For the past decade, her family and friends have looked forward to the annual calendar she assembled, highlighting her beautiful photos. She also loved to read, write, tole paint, decorate, travel, and dance.
Dianne is survived by her sons Mark Wickens, Toronto, and Quent (Lisa) Wickens, North East Point, NS; grandchildren Abbey and Nate Wickens, North East Point; brother Arthur “Bud” (Diane) Nickerson, Centreville, NS; sister Pamela (Robey) Hatfield, Upper Port Latour, NS; aunt Katherine “Kay” Toomey, Quispamsis, NB; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Dianne was predeceased by her brother Jack Nickerson, of Upper LaHave, NS.
There will be no funeral service. A private interment will take place at a later date in Victoria. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the BC Cancer Foundation or Victoria Hospice, both of which provided excellent care and support at the end of Dianne’s life.
In addition to BC Cancer Victoria and Victoria Hospice, the family would like to thank the many doctors, nurses, and other staff at the Royal Jubilee Hospital who cared for Dianne over the past year, and especially in her final weeks. Social worker Michelle Dale’s empathetic and efficient assistance was particularly appreciated. Also, the family is grateful to the cheerful and competent staff at Marrion Village for making Dianne’s last weeks at home both possible and comfortable. Finally, a special thank you to Dianne’s friend, Donna Ryan, who in recent months was always willing to help when needed. In a trying time, she made things easier.
