It is with great sadness that we share the passing of June Akerfeldt (Grant) in her 97th year on July 17, 2022 at Eagle Terrace in Newmarket. She is predeceased by her loving husband of 49 years Gunnar and predeceased by her long time companion Don Bate. Born to loving parents Edith and Victor Grant. Cherished Mother to Richard Akerfeldt, David Akerfeldt and Susan Blundon. Loving grandmother to 7 grandchildren Neill, April, Tracey, Kim, Bill, Doug, Rose and Stephen, 12 great grandchildren Jenny, Summer, Ricky, Jesse, Jaeme, Rob, Amanda, Sheldon, Tyler, Cassidy, Cory and Bradley and 7 great-great grandchildren Benson, Myah, Nash, Kolby, Bryson, Quin and Ella.
June was born in Toronto on March 5, 1926. June and Gunnar met while they were both working at Reliable Toy and they were married in 1945. They welcomed their three children, while making their home in Weston.
Family was very important to June and she was seen as the neighbourhood Mom. All the kids would hang out at their house including neighbours, cousins and friends. When the kids were no longer at home, June and Gunnar liked to travel. They would take bus tours to places like Florida and British Columbia. June continued to travel on bus trips with her senior group, even travelling to Atlantic City in a snowstorm. Later June and Don travelled on many casino runs with David and Lynda. June also enjoyed family card nights where we would play Euchre, Crazy Eights and even Poker. She really enjoyed bowling and participated in leagues into her 90’s.
Anyone who knew June was touched by her kind and caring nature. She was a strength for her family and will be missed by all she loved.
A Celebration of Life will be held August 14 from 1 – 5 pm at David and Tracey’s home at 68 Woodcrest Road, Barrie, ON.
