Julia passed away peacefully on March 28, 2022 at the age of 97. She was born on Feb. 19, 1925 in Sady, Poland, to her parents Jozef and Władysława Pióro (nee Klein). Beloved wife and mother, Julia joins her husband Ludwik/Lutek Tyndorf, sons Henry and Ted, and daughter-in-law Josie in heaven. Devoted Babcia to Christopher (Ewelina), Mark (Maggie), Matt (Priscilla), Julie, Teresa (Jeremy), Juliana (Tim) and, Michael (Wendy). Cherished Great Grandmother to Thomas, Josie, Libby, Jossalin, Callista, Ellie, and Sloane. She will be missed and remembered fondly by her surviving family: her sister, Marysia, daughter-in-law, Christine, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews in the Toronto area, Detroit and Chicago.
Julia was raised on the family farm with her sisters Marysia, Salcia, Wacia, Władzia, Zosia, and brother Antoni. Their favourite activity was singing together, they were so boisterous that the neighbours from across the river would say, “the Pióros are singing again!” Life was happy until 1943 when they were forced to leave their home to work in Germany during WWII. When the war ended, Julia and two of her sisters, Zosia and Wacia, chose to immigrate to Canada; the rest of the family landed in the USA. Arriving in Halifax’s Pier 21, the three sisters then planted their roots in Toronto. Julia unexpectedly reunited with an old school mate, Lutek Tyndorf, on the journey to Canada. They were married 3 months later and settled in the west end of Toronto.
Julia and Lutek worked hard to build their life in Toronto, learning English and saving their money to provide their sons an opportunity for a better future. Julia adored her family deeply, and was always so proud of her accomplished sons. She worked in the housewares department at Eaton’s Queen Street, and retired after 30 years. Both were proud members of the St. Mary’s Church choir, and were very involved in the church community.
Julia loved the outdoors, but she especially loved her garden. If there was no answer at her door, she would most likely be found tending to the many fruits and vegetables in her backyard, including the grandchildren’s favourites “Babcia’s grass,” plums, apricots, raspberries, gooseberries and tomatoes – Babcia grew the BEST tomatoes! No one was ever hungry after a visit to Babcia’s house and usually left with Tupperware containers full of extra pierogi.
A devoted Catholic, Julia was kind, supportive, strong, and strong – willed, continuing to shovel her own driveway until the age of 89. Her laugh was always genuine and contagious. We’re blessed to have had her with us as long as we did.
In 2015, Julia moved from her home on Martin Grove Road to Wawel Villa, a Polish seniors’ home, and was later joined by her sister-in-law Klara Tyndorf. She lived there until moving to Wesburn Manor in 2021. The family is deeply appreciative of, and grateful for the compassionate care, kindness, and support that Julia received from the staff at both residences.
