Peacefully and surrounded by family on August 28, 2022, Joyce Violet Johnson ‘Beatsy’ Niigata Aabik Kwe, a member of Walpole Island First Nation, entered the spirit world at the age of 70. She will be remembered by her beloved wife Georgina R. Toulouse Bebamikawe, son Michael Toulouse and her canine companion Good Walk. Daughter of the late Nealand and Marybelle Johnson. Joyce has now joined her brothers Dennis ‘Minni’, Nealand Jr. ‘Flip’ and Ralph ‘Augie’. She will be sadly missed by her many close family and friends, including the Pierce Family, the Toulouse Family, her many nieces, nephews and all the extended family. Joyce was a strong Anishnaabekwe. A warrior, and a happy go lucky woman with a loving heart. She followed the Anishinaabemaadzowin, and enjoyed making her black ash baskets – which she learned from her grandmother. She loved the outdoors, especially being on the water; pontooning, fishing, golfing and travelling. She’s had many adventures with her partner Georgina, going to powwows, cultural events, visiting museums – and loved learning the history of each place they visited. She’s also made time to visit family in Oklahoma and Salamanca. Joyce has helped many people over the years, working at Anduhyaun Emergency Shelter in Toronto. Joyce held various managerial positions; working for Walpole Island First Nation as the Director of Operations and as the Museum Director. She was a Business woman who ran Bebamikawe Studios with Georgina and the family Chematogan camp. Family and Friends are invited for visitation at the HAYCOCK-CAVANAGH FUNERAL HOME, 409 Nelson Street in Wallaceburg on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 from 2-4 and 6-8pm. Her funeral service will be held at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church (Walpole Island) on Thursday, September 1 at 2pm with cremation to follow.
