Chaves, Jose Maria – Passed away on Sunday, August 14, 2022 at Cambridge Memorial Hospital with his two children by his side. He will be missed by all his family. He was a devoted and loving family man. He will be remembered for always being helpful, kind and loyal to all the people that were in his life. He was a survivor; he had brothers a few years older and younger that passed away as young toddlers for various reasons such as disease. He survived to be the only family member to be trained in Lisbon for the Portuguese Army where he was stationed in Guinea Biseau. He experienced the brutal hardships of front line combat that he witnessed and survived the war. As a child he would work the fields walking 45 minutes or longer on barefoot to do farm chores with his siblings. He married the love his life, and they worked together to build a better future in Canada as they sponsored their familiy members to Canada just as they were sponsored. They raised two children Luis Albert Chaves and Delia Almada Hayward (Shawn)and had a beautiful life together in Canada. Loyal to his wife and partner till her death Leonor Bairos Chaves. By her side he never complained and was always caring for her. He enjoyed caring for his grandchildren Alyssa Schwenker (Mathew)and Jesse Chaves and later as a senior he cared for Justine Hayward. He was a devoted Catholic man going to church every weekend. Enjoyed making wine and tending to his vegetable garden. He had a big family of many brothers and sisters, and brother and sister-in- laws, nieces and nephews who will also miss him deeply. Predeceased by his parents Francisco Almada Chaves and Maria Puim Chaves. Visitation at Corbett Funeral Home, 95 Dundas Street, N., Cambridge N1R 5N6 519-740-0669 on Monday, August 22, 2022 from 5 pm – 9 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church,185 Elgin Street, South, Cambridge on Tuesday, August 23, 2022 at 11 am. Interment to follow at Parklawn Cemetery, Cambridge, ON. Prayers will be held in the Funeral Home Chapel on Monday, evening at 8 pm. We also like to say thank you to the Nurses, Psw’s and the Doctors for their care at Cambridge Memorial Hospital.
