It is with deep sadness that the family of John Poleschuk announce his passing at home on January 19th, 2022 with family in attendance.
John was born in Vickers Heights, June 24th, 1937 to Margaret and Peter Poleschuk at home. Growing up in Vickers Heights, John attended V.H. School as well as Ukrainian language lessons and violin lessons in the East End. He developed a keen love of sports at this time playing baseball, football and hockey. During summers in high school, John was first employed by GLP on the tugboats harvesting timber in log boom on Lake Helen. After graduating from Selkirk CVI John again went to work for Great Lakes Paper, but in the mill proper. He held many different positions from mill wright apprentice to Mechanical Superintendent. In 1990 John moved his wife Diana to BC and became the Gold River/Tahsis mill manager. Sent by Avenor as a corporate trouble-shooter, John also managed Port Hardy, Powell River, and Port Alberny mills while settling in Campbell River. He was also sent as a consultant to Finland, China and Taiwan.
John married Diana Silver in 1958 and together they enjoyed many varied interests while building their lives together. Long-time members of TB Yacht Club, they were often seen aboard “Katrina” on Lake Superior or “Katrina II” in the Nootka Sound Area. John was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and served on a multitude of varied committees.
After retirement John spent his winters in Indio, California playing tennis and golf. Spring and Autumns in Campbell River hiking, golf and tennis as well as working out at the local Rec Center. Summers John came home to Thunder Bay to spend time with family and friends at camp.
Predeceased by his parents, brother Paul and wife Diana. John is survived by sisters Evelyn and Frances Poleschuk and Penny McConnell (Brentwood, Tennessee) Brothers-in-law Joe (Lorna), Richard (Marianne), Jim (Cheryl) and Mike (Susan) Silver. Children Cathy (Jim) Wing, John (Angie), and Lawrence Poleschuk. Grandsons Robin Wing (Kühlungsborn, Germany) Billy Poleschuk (Moose Jaw, Sask.) granddaughters Caitlyn Wing (London, Ont.) and Tielle Poleschuk, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place and interment will take place in St. Patrick’s Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada.
