John ‘Jook’ Munroe
John “Jook” Munroe
Surrounded by family, he died on Saturday, February 12 at his
residence in New Glasgow.
A teacher of 30 years, Nova Scotia Sports Hall of Fame
golfer, and loving grandfather, father and husband, John maintained
his renowned sense of humour until the very end of his
life.
Born in Reserve Mines, Cape Breton, John spent the first
twenty-some years of his life at the Lingan Golf Club; at first as a
caddie and later as a member.
John and his wife Sheliah raised two incredible children –
Dwane and Dawn. He had an unrelenting and special love for his five
grandchildren: Alexander, Grace, Kristen, Margaret, and
Alex.
John was always happiest when he was surrounded by his
family, working on his tree farm, or spending his time at Abercrombie
Country Club, where he spent years as a golf pro. John’s one
piece of advice: enjoy every day.
The few things he wished for in heaven included a lot of
room, and for his friends to be waiting for him at the first hole of a
golf course.
His last words were “If it’s not nice up
there, I’m coming back.” There must be a great golf
course in heaven.
“If you can, say something nice about me. If you
have to, lie a little, laugh a lot.” – John
“Jook” Munroe.
John is survived by his loving wife Sheliah, his sister
Dorothy and his brother-in-law Fred Miles, his daughter Dawn and
husband Doug Wright, son Dwane and Dwane’s wife Anne, and
his grandchildren, Alexander, Grace, Kristen (husband Colby Mckay),
Margaret, and Alex.
John’s family would like to thank Dr. Craig and all
the staff at the Aberdeen Hospital, Dr. Fraga and her team at the
Victoria General, Dr. Horton, Ardis Smith-Sewell, and the palliative
care team, the VON, and the Canadian Red Cross. A celebration of his
life will take place with a round of golf at a later
date.
Donations can be made to the Canadian Red Cross or the
Canadian Cancer Society.
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of John ‘Jook’ Munroe 2022..
