With heavy hearts, John Henry Emmett’s family announces his passing on Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, after a short illness. He passed peacefully with loved ones by his side.
Born July 26, 1950, in Halifax, he was the son of the late Robie and Isabelle (Gehue) Emmett.
John was a proud member of the Canadian Armed Forces for 20 years. He particularly loved his postings in Germany, where he developed a love for the local culture and cuisine. He was well known for his Octoberfest celebrations, complete with schnitzel and beer.
Following his retirement from the military, he was employed by Moir’s and then with Canada Post, working in the Halifax area until retiring five years ago. Following retirement, John and Lori made their home in Catalone, where he enjoyed fishing and puttering around the property.
John had many pets throughout his life, all of which held a special place in his heart. They were members of his family who brought a lot of unconditional love and joy into his life. He also enjoyed the local wildlife that would visit his yard. He was known for feeding the birds and enjoyed watching a family of eagles return yearly.
For 40 years, he was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion, his last active branch being Branch 62 in Louisbourg.
John is survived by his wife, Lori (Spear) Emmett; daughter, Dr. Cheala (Chad) Fralic; son, Stefan Emmett; and brothers, Robert Emmett and Robie “Butch” (Nancy) Emmett; and nephew Troy (Shyloe) Emmett and grandnieces.
Visitation will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Saturday, September 10, from 1-2 p.m., followed by a service in the chapel at 2 p.m. with Mr. Gary Grant officiating. Interment will take place in Loch End Cemetery, Catalone, time to be chosen at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Cape Breton SPCA or the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 62, Louisbourg.

Death notice for the town of: Sydney, Province: Nova Scotia
It is so hard to believe this. John and I were the best best friends in grade school (Chebucto School)
I was with him when he joined The Arm Forces. I was 15 at the time and he was 16. So long ago. Saw John again years later in Halifax, and lost track of him after his visit.
He always came to mind every time I go to Halifax.
My Sympathy goes out to his family.
