Obituary
John Brian Smylie
December 8, 1957-June 2, 2022
On June 2, 2022 John Brian Smylie was called home to his Heavenly Father.
John was born in Regina, SK to Don and Val Smylie. He lived in Imperial, Saskatchewan and Ottawa, ON, but spent most of his childhood in Brockville, ON. John spent his summers as a teenager working at Robinson’s General Store in Dorset, and it was there that he began his grocery career. John attended the University of Guelph, first taking sciences, but then switching over to Management Economics, and it was there that he met Angela, and his life was forever changed. John and Angela married in 1986, and were blessed with four beautiful children. John’s grocery career brought the family from Guelph to Simcoe, Brockville and, finally to Trenton. John’s passion for life, his infectious sense of humour, his commitment to his community pale in comparison to the love he had for his family. John’s wife and children were the light of his life. Every decision he made was with the well-being of his family in mind. He drank in their love, and it sustained him. John’s adult life was spent in service to his community. As a grocer, he was in a position to touch the hearts and lives of thousands of people. He did not take this responsibility lightly, and as a result, John was able to connect with people in a way that was tremendously fulfilling. John’s role as Honorary Colonel of 436 Squadron and, most recently, as Honorary Colonel of 8Wing Trenton were the pinnacle of his experiences. He cherished every moment spent in that role, and he wore his uniform with pride. The community mourns the loss of a great leader and advocate.
John is survived by his wife, Angela, their four children, Ian (Jessica), Lindsay (Tony), Jessica (Travis), Megan, and 8 grandchildren. He is also survived by his five siblings: Tom (Jackie), Michael, Mari (Walter), Paul (Susan) and Jane (Bob), and his many nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are pending. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the TMHF would be appreciated by the family. Online condolences at www.weaverfuneralhomes.com
