It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of João Da Costa Santos, 92 at Toronto Grace Heath Centre on Sunday, September 4th, 2022 surrounded by the love and comfort of his family (familia).
João was born in Matas Lourinhã, Portugal on July 5, 1930 to Antonio Dos Santos and Deoinea De Jesus. João was part of the Portuguese Military Artillery. He was the foreman of a Brick Company and a winemaker in Portugal. João did construction work in France, as well as in Switzerland, before he immigrated to Canada in 1971 (“Meu rico Canada”). He was later joined by his wife and sons and where they made Toronto their home. João worked in the Construction industry in Canada for over 40 years and retired in 1995.
Married to his loving wife Maria, for 65 years, they enjoyed countless trips for extended periods of time to the home they built together in the mainland – Paiol, Aldeia Galega da Merceana, Alenquer, Distrito de Lisboa, Portugal. In the company of their extended family, they visited numerous cities within their homeland and Spain. Not only did they travel abroad, but they both also enjoyed adventures in Florida and Disneyland.
João loved his Portuguese soccer team ‘Sporting CP’ and always made the effort to use the colour green. He enjoyed spending time on his veranda watching the people pass by, or having a nice glass of vine tinto with his meals followed by a ‘café com cheirinho’. Our dearest Johnny found deep joy in simply observing his family and friends interacting and making life memories
Family was of greatest importance to João, and he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Maria da Conceicão Jorge Santos and children, Manuel Jorge (Elizabete) and Rui (Dina). João will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Raquel (Chad), Melissa (Jeff), Andrew (Jasmine) and Marcus. He was a proud great-grandfather to Johnathan, Arthur and Mateo who will be forever shaped by their avô’s love. He will also be mourned by his surviving sister, Laura. His nephew Casimiro (Paula) which he treated like a son, extended family and friends in Portugal. João was an example of hard work, faith and devotion to family.
He will be forever missed and always in our hearts. May the Lord keep you in his loving embrace. Até nos encontrarmos novamente, um brinde ao nosso grande marido, pai, sogro, avô, bisavô, irmão, tio e querido amigo.
