Obituary
It is with heavy hearts and deepest sorrow that we announce the passing of Jienine Ivanka Josepha Hubick on May 19th, 2022, at the age of 71. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, after a brave and valiant battle with cancer.
She is survived by Howard, her devoted husband of 52 years; her three sons Shane (Kara), Shelby (Mim), Jason (Emma); and five grandchildren, Taylor, Matt, Meadow, Cole, and Sawyer. Jienine is also survived by her two loving sisters, Maria Parks and Milena Anderson; and her nieces and nephews, Ryan, Ashley, Cheryl, and Chris. She was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Maria Kamalich.
Jienine was born on June 24th, 1950, in Valun on the island of Cres, Yugoslavia (now Croatia). Her family fled Yugoslavia when she was eight years old. An overseas journey led them to Canada and eventually, Regina where she grew up, went to school and met her husband, Howard. They married in January 1970 before moving to Edmonton and soon after to Calgary where they started a family and met many lifelong friends.
Jienine loved her animals and had several dogs as family pets over her lifetime. Her dear ‘Sammy’ passed away in 2014 and she took some time before she got her current dogs, Lexi and Marley. “The girls” are surely missing their Momma today. Jienine took care of many family and friends’ animals and often fed stray cats in Croatia or wherever she travelled.
Jienine was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in October 2015. Over the next six and a half years she bravely faced many complications and obstacles as she underwent various treatments. Everyone who knew Jienine would say her incredibly positive nature, spirit, faith, strength, and love for her family all contributed to her significantly outliving the initial prognosis. It would be wrong to say that she lost her battle as she never stopped fighting. Throughout her treatment, she continued to look after her family and live her life to the fullest. There was no quit in Jienine. Through her, we learned what true resilience and perseverance look like. To the very end, Jienine did it her way!
Jienine will be dearly missed and always remembered.
Jienine requested a Celebration of Life be held in her honour instead of a traditional funeral service. We request all of Jienine’s loved ones to join us in celebrating her beautiful life on June 17th, 2022 from 1:00pm – 4:00 pm at The Lake House on Lake Bonavista (747 Lake Bonavista Drive SE).
