JERENIUK Halyna Rosalia July 22 2022

Halyna Rosalia Jereniuk was born Oct 10, 1951, to Paul and Irene Hrach in Nottingham, England. In 1953, the family immigrated to Canada and made their homestead near Evansburg, Alberta. The family eventually moved to Edmonton, settling in community of Wellington. The Hrach family grew with the addition of Halyna’s two younger brothers, Walter and Ray. They became active members of St. Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Halyna was a member of CYMK and attended Victoria High School.
Halyna worked various jobs of which her longest and best career was with Woodwards/Safeway. She retired from this profession after 32 years with the distinction of head cashier.
In December of 1972, God blessed her with two handsome twins Taras and Paul. In 1980 Halyna met and fell in love with her singing Cossack, Bohdan. Bohdan was smitten by her beauty and quickly got engaged and married on November 14, 1980. In August of 1981 her third son, her baby Andriy was born to complete her everlasting family.
Halyna had a lot of interests, including her love of painting, ceramics, sewing, and cooking. She was a long serving cook at Camp Bar-v-nok at Pigeon Lake. She planned and prepared three healthy meals and snacks a day for two weeks every summer for fifteen years. Campers and councilors always enjoyed her food and said it was better than what they ate at home. Most notable were her famous homemade cinnamon and cheese buns. In 1988, she also started the M.E. Lazerte booster club that helped provide financial support to school athletes for two decades.
Her passion for volunteering also extended to her beloved parish of St. John’s Cathedral. She was a Sunday School Administrator, a member of the Ukrainian Woman’s Association of Canada and helped with catering at the Cultural Centre. Halyna was an integral part in the organizing of many Church events. These include Fall Ball, Malanka, Lazarus Saturday Breakfast and Sunday School picnics.
Whenever she could she loved to travel, particularly to Phoenix, Arizona, where her and Bo, sister-in-law Lesia and brother-in-law Orest bought a beautiful condo in North Phoenix. Being a great hostess, she would gladly show guests her favorite spots around the area – including the Music Museum and the Desert Botanical Gardens. One of her favorite activities was to spend time with family and friends on hikes throughout trails in the area. She even went on an overnight hiking trip to the base of the Grand Canyon. Halyna also looked forward to travelling with her husband and the Ukrainian Male Chorus to various European destinations. She loved the global cuisine, shopping and touring historical landmarks.
Halyna was an avid supporter of the arts. She attended countless plays, musicals and concerts, usually with her dear friend, Halyna Elkow.
In 2014 she was diagnosed with stage 4 neck cancer which she bravely fought and conquered this deadly disease.
In May of 2022 Halyna was diagnosed with ALS and her health quickly digressed. Bravely she fought this cruel disease as long as she could. However sadly she succumbed to ALS on July 22, 2022, at 8:25 pm.
Halyna was preceded by her parents, Paul and Irene Hrach and her in-laws, Otto and Vera Jereniuk. She leaves to morn her husband Bohdan (Bo) of 42 years. Sons Taras (TJ), his wife Susan and grandchildren Adam and Justine; Paul, his wife Marsha and granddaughters Ksenya and Tanissa; her youngest son Andriy. Brothers Walter and Ray as well as brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws, Ron and Genia; Victor and Cheryl; Orest and Lesia. Numerous beloved nephews, nieces, extended family and close friends that all cared for her unconditionally.
She was loved and will be dearly missed however her legacy will be eternal.

Sympathies message

  1. Halyna played a major part in making us feel included as part of the Jereniuk traditions and celebrations when we moved to Edmonton as a young family fortunate enough to be neighbours to Otto and Vera Jereniuk. Our deepest condolences to Bohdan and all of the family. We will cherish our memories of Halyna, especially of her kindness and thoughtfulness towards our family.
