On October 20, 2022, at the age of 80, Jeannine passed away peacefully from multiple health issues which worsened due to a fall in her home in July.
Remembered by her daughter, Michelle (Jim); brother, John. Predeceased by her husband Garrett (Garry) in 2016; parents, Armand and Mollie (McWilliam) LaFrance; sisters, Alice and Colette. She will also be kept in loving memory by dear friend, Lorna and the rest of ‘The Pigeon Lake Gang’, Sue and Joan.
Jeannine was born in Calgary but spent the majority of her life in Edmonton where she met Garry and had her daughter. Once her daughter was in school, she returned to school as a mature student, eventually completing a Master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Alberta. She tested the library waters in a few places but truly found her calling when she began working at the Bruce Peel Special Collections Library at the U of A. She retired as the head of that library in 2010.
Jeannine loved to travel, either to conferences for work, or with Garry on holiday. She was a supporter of The Citadel Theatre since its beginning, the Edmonton Opera and other small theatres and musical groups in the city. She was at her happiest, though, with a crossword puzzle on the go, music on the radio, and a cat in her lap.
Thank you to everyone at Capital Care Grandview for surrounding Jeannine with kindness and caring attention during her final weeks of life. As per her wishes, there will be no service, and cremation has taken place.
Memorial Donations may be made to the Special Collections Library through ualberta.alumniq.com/giving/to/libraries_museums, or to a favourite animal rescue organization.
