James’ Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden but peaceful passing of James “Jim” Mahoney, of St. Mary’s, Newfoundland, on Friday, March 5, 2021, at the Health Science Centre, St. John’s, at the age of 77 years.
Born in St. Mary’s, to John “Jack” & Mary “Molly” Mahoney, Jim worked in the construction industry for many years and was a well-known and well-respected heavy equipment operator. In 1975, Jim married the love of his life, Ann Mahoney (nee Dobbin) and went on to have two children. He always put family first, being a dedicated father to his sons, James Jr., who went on to pursue career in the Canadian Forces Reserves as a Cadet Instructor Cadre Officer and Michael, who followed in his father’s footsteps to work in the construction industry.
Jim was a strong, kind, loving, and supportive father with his knowledge and guidance being the foundation of his family. He was also passionate about horses, having had many over the years and spending much of his time reading and researching different breeds. There was many a yarn told around the kitchen table when he and his friends would get together and talk about horses. In addition to his passion of horses, he also enjoyed reading western novels.
Jim is predeceased by his wife Ann, for whom he cared for and loved so much, father and mother (John & Mary Mahoney), father-in-law and mother-in-law John & Kathleen Dobbin, sisters Betty (Steve) Mandville and Angela Tobin and all other deceased members of the Mahoney and Dobbin families.
Jim leaves behind his two sons James Mahoney Jr. and Michael Mahoney (Katijah), grandchildren: Eliyah, Gabby and Lorenna, brother Peter (Lorraine) Mahoney, very special brother-in-law Fergus (Uriel) Tobin, two special, caring, and wonderful Homecare workers Karen Butler and Shannon Critch, special friend Jerome Butler, who made many visits when public health permitted and all other members of the Mahoney and Dobbin families.
A very special thank you is extended to our parish priest, Rev. Fr. Steve Courtney, the staff of the Health Sciences Centre, St. Mary’s Clinic, St. Mary’s Pharmacy, Gibbons’ Ambulance Service and Funeral Home, and Best of Care Ltd., including Gloria and all the other fantastic Homecare workers who supported Jim.
Cremation has taken place. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, September 22, 2022, at 11am, at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, St. Mary’s. Burial to follow.
