James “Jim Joseph Carey 3 octobre 1938

À la mémoire de
James “Jim” Joseph Carey
3 octobre 1938 –
27 février 2022
Died on Sunday, February 27, 2022, at the age of 83, surrounded by his loving family. Devoted husband to Mary Ellen (Daly) and Rosalie (Mollard) (predeceased). Father of five opinionated women, Valerie, Colleen (Allan Pontello), Stephanie (Jeff Sweeney), Kristen (Anthony Bevilacqua) and Shannon (Miriam Sant’Ana). Doting grandfather to Victoria, Riley, Sabrina, Declan, Rory, Jackson, Emma, Sydney and Theo. Brother of Patricia and Larry (predeceased), Mary Eileen (Jim Carey-Hill) and Rita. Valued brother-in-law to the Daly and Mollard Clans, and uncle to many wonderful nieces and nephews.
He was an exceptional leader who fought for recognition of the professionalism of teachers, the importance of Catholic Education and brought about great change due to his dedication. He was past President and General Secretary of the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association (OECTA) and past President and Governor of the Ontario Teachers’ Federation (OTF). He served as Vice President of (CEFO), the Catholic Education Foundation of Ontario right up until his death.
Jim had a fierce love of baseball and competition that spanned seven decades as both a player and coach. He drove Mary Ellen to baseball fields and stadiums across North America along with his children and grandchildren. His love of the Toronto Blue Jays, Maple Leafs and Raptors provided many long hours of happiness and contentment. (Most of the time.)
Jim was extremely blessed in the company that he kept being a friend to many amazing and caring people who challenged him to stretch and grow. He truly valued their influence in his life even though he was known to sing and do things “My Way”.
James Joseph Carey leaves behind a legacy of care for the less fortunate and the influence of his strong work ethic. He served for many years on the Board of Directors for the Catholic Children’s Aid Society and instilled in his daughters, his students, his peers, and his grandchildren the need to serve and give back to the world to make it a better place.
Thank you to Dorothy Ley Hospice staff who provided him with exceptional end of life care.
