Haley, Joseph Chester, age 82, of Havre Boucher, Antigonish
County, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2022, at St.
Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish.
Born in Glace Bay, he was a son of the late Jack and Beatrice
(Tracey) Haley.
Chester, Papa Ches as he was lovingly known, lived a good,
full life, and always said he had no regrets. He started his career as
a financial advisor that took him to Fredericton and Newfoundland and
then back to Port Hawkesbury where he settled in Havre Boucher with
his beloved wife, Sheilah. They loved the community so much they built
a house and completed their family with three more children. Papa Ches
had several careers, always dealing with people, before
landing at Stora Forest Industries where he was fondly known as
“Chester the Tester” until he retired. He was
active in his community serving as a Municipal Councilor for
Antigonish County, a volunteer fireman, and with the
Kinsmen. Ches has “been around the world twice”
with stops in Singapore, China, Australia, Cambodia, Geneva, France,
Italy, and more. He was a joker, and his sense of humor made
him the life of the party, though his off-the-cuff remarks were not
always for the faint of heart. Ches was so proud of all his
kids’ and grandkids’ accomplishments.
Dad always said, “If you don’t ask for it,
you’ll never get it”, the consummate negotiator. His
final request to his adult children was, “Play nice after
I’m gone.”
He is survived by his children, Tracey (Todd), Ottawa, and
her children, Haley, Jacob, and Sam; Darren (Rose), Mahone Bay;
Dannette (Sean), Geneva, Switzerland, and her children, Brogan and
Liam; Owen (Lana), Maple Bay, BC, and his children, Samantha, Shayna,
Johanna, and Joshua; Kevin, Ottawa, and his children, Keeley and Rory;
and Maureen, Prince George, BC, and children, Regan and Tristan;
great-grandchildren, Finnigan and Felix; long-time companion and
guardian angel, Lila Beshong; and siblings, Marie (late Ed) Houlihan
and Johnny (Carol) Haley, both of Sarnia, ON.
Predeceased by his wife, Sheilah; granddaughter, Hannah;
brother, Charlie (Marie); sister, Pearl (Alex); and niece, Cathy
Houlihan.
Cremation has taken place. Funeral Mass will be
held Friday, September 9th at 11:00 am in St.
Paul’s Church, Havre Boucher, with Reverend Allan MacPhie
presiding. A reception will be held in the Havre Boucher
Community Center after the service. Burial will be in St.
Ann’s Cemetery, Glace Bay.
