HOLYK Joseph July 18 2022

It is with great sadness that the family of Joseph Holyk announces his passing on July 18, 2022 at the age of 88 years. His memory will be cherished by his son Darrell and daughters Cheryl (Andrew) and Peggy (Greg); eight grandchildren: Emma (Johann), Drew, Joel, Justin, Luke, Amanda, Graeme, and Joey; three sisters-in-law: Mary, Kathryn and Eva; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Joe was predeceased by his wife Dorothy of 62 years; parents John and Mary Holyk; brothers Bill, Harry, and Mike; and infant sister Rose.
Joe was born on a farm near Andrew, Alberta. He attended school in Andrew and later the University of Alberta where he graduated with a Bachelor of Education. He taught math at McCauley Junior High and Queen Elizabeth High School.
Meeting the love of his life Dorothy Kirkwood in February of 1958, the two were married that August. They soon purchased their first home in the community of Gold Bar in Edmonton, where Darrell, Cheryl, and Peggy were born. Joe was active in the community there, in addition to teaching and helping his Dad on the family farm.
In 1974, Joe resigned from teaching, moved the family out to Lamont, and took over the family farm near Andrew. He quickly became involved in that community in numerous capacities. He was an active member of the Lamont United Church, singing in the choir and serving on various boards. He also served through the Lamont Lions Club, as well as the Lamont Minor Hockey Association.
Music was a constant love for Joe. He played the tenor saxophone alongside his brother Bill and other musicians in their own band over the years, first called the Mellotones and later the Altones. Throughout his life you could often find him tapping his fingers to a favorite tune, and in his later years he loved to watch music videos of his favorite musicians. Woodworking was another one of Joe’s pastimes. Whether it was a piano that needed refinishing or an antique side table, Joe loved restoring furniture to its former glory.
Upon retirement, Joe and Dorothy relocated to Fort Saskatchewan and later St. Albert. He loved spending time with immediate family, grandchildren, extended family and friends. He rarely turned down a second dessert (much to Dorothy’s chagrin), a glass of red wine, or a beer and clam. Whether around the table or watching the game, Joe enjoyed being around those closest to him. His family will greatly miss those times with him.
We wish to extend our sincere gratitude to all the caregivers who administered treatment with grace, compassion and dignity at Kipnes Center for Veterans in Edmonton.
The family will be honoring Joe’s memory privately. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to
