Obituary
Herman ROSS Woolger was the son of the late George and Emma Woolger (Yeo) of Port Loring. Husband of the late Joam Margaret Lappin, father of Glenda Evers, Butch Woolger, Maxine Whitehead, Paula Champagne, Roland Woolger, grandfather to Ryan Evers (Pamela), Kaylan Evers (Melissa), Jared Evers (Sarah), Stephanie Woolger (Mike), Shaun Woolger (Francesca), Shelley Whitehead, Warren Whitehead (Jennifer), and Cory Whitehead (Tess). Great grandfather to 13 children 7 girls and 6 boys. Brother to Bernice Towns (Bazel).
Ross was born in Port Loring at the old Outpost. He was the first child to George and Emma and it would be six years before he had to share his parents with his only sibling, Bernice. Ross grew up in Port Loring attending school up to grade 8 when he stared working at Rogerson’s Mill on Wilson Lake. At some point before meeting Joan, Ross and a buddy took off the the West Coast of Canada. Emma was worried that he would not come back as two of her brothers had done. But, Ross returned and got work in Toronto at the slaughter house and joined the 48th Highlanders.
In 1949, Ross was giving a friend a lift who happened to live in the same neighbourhood as Joan. Ross spotted Joan on the sidewalk with her little sister, Kathy, and wondered if the little girl was her daughter. His friend told him the little girl was Joan’s sister and that Joan was single, so Ross turned the car around and was introduced to Joan. That introduction led to the marriage on December 22, 1950 in Port Loring at the United Church Manse. The couple made Port Loring their home and together raised five children.
Ross was a labourer all his working career. He worked in the lumber mills, the logging camps, did road work, drove dump trucks, and operated all sorts of heavy equipment his favorite being the bulldozer. Ross enjoyed hunting and fishing and would take time to go guiding for Morey Stillar during the hunting season and sometimes due guiding for the tourist when they stayed at the cottages George and Emma owned.
Ross was mechanically minded and always had a chain saw, outboard motor, tractor or some other vehicle that he was tinkering with. He loved the old country singers such as Hank Snow, Wilf Carter and Johnny Cash. At the nursing home, he could be easily persuaded to attend any of the entertainment that involved music.
Ross spend the last six years of his life i a nursing home starting at Lady Isabelle and moving to Eastholme. He will be remembered for his ability to fix anything, his quick wit, his smile and his ability to recite poetry he could recall from as far back as his first year in school.
