Obituary for
Helene Tonhauser (Rosenberger)
On May 31, 2022, Helene Tonhauser of Cosmo, AB peacefully passed away at the age of 88 years.
Helene leaves to cherish her memory, daughter, Irene (Bruce) Farrants, of Edmonton, AB; grandchildren, Kory (Dayle Charters) Farrants, Danny Tonhauser, Sherry Farrants, Trevor (Trinity Chadd) Farrants; great grandchildren, Arieanna, Hailey, Paisley, Declan, Madison, and Walker; and many more dear relatives, neighbours, and friends.
Helene was predeceased by her husband, George (1999); parents, Joseph and Maria; and two sisters.
Helene was born in Handlova, Slovakia on December 23rd, 1933 and was the youngest of three girls. Her father passed away when she was 7 and a year later the war broke out, which forced the family to leave their home. After being shuffled from place to place, they finally settled in Germany. Although her sisters married and started families in Germany, Helene decided to immigrate to Canada in 1957.
In 1959 Helene married the love of her life, George Tonhauser. They settled on the family farm along with George’s parents, who had immigrated to Canada in the 1920’s. The next 40 years was spent alongside George, raising their one daughter Irene and working on the farm. Helene had a beautiful flower and vegetable garden. She was also a wonderful cook and kept a spotless house.
When George passed away in 1999 she learned how to drive, in order to stay on the farm. It eventually got lonely for her and she moved to Barrhead, where she lived for 10 years and made many new friends. Later she moved to the Pleasant View Lodge, in Mayerthorpe, where she reconnected with a lot of old friends. Her greatest joy, later in life, was her great grandchildren.
The last 8 months were hard for Helene and she mentioned countless times that she wanted to be with George. Now, after almost 22 years, they are together again. She will be greatly missed by everyone and never forgotten.
A Celebration of Helene’s Life will be held Saturday, June 25, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at the Sangudo Community Hall (formerly the Elks Hall), 4920 50 Street, Sangudo AB.
In lieu of other tributes, donations would be welcome to the Cosmo Cemetery Fund, Box 10, Site 3, RR 1, Cherhill, AB T0E 0J0
Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Helene
