Obituary
Our family regretfully announces that our father Harold Spring, son of Percy and Vera Spring, passed
away peacefully in his sleep on the evening of August 29, 2022 at Blackadar Continuing Care in Dundas
Ontario.
Harold was recently widowed, having lost his wife Ann of 63 years on July 17th this year. He is survived by
his children Steven (Liliana), Robert (Denise) and Carol (John) and was the loving grandfather to Maggie,
Peter, Nora, Joshua, Thomas, Phillip, Leo and Serena, and great- grandfather to Molly. Harold is
predeceased by his older brothers Douglas (Vivian) and Gerald (Muriel) and was a loving Uncle and
Cousin to his entire extended family.
Harold was born and grew up in Toronto, graduating from Forest Hill Collegiate Institute. He was an
accomplished athlete in hockey and baseball, and his love of sports was evident throughout his long life.
He found his vocation while clerking for his father’s insurance company, and his pursuit of accounting
culminated in him earning his Chartered Accountant designation from the Institute of Chartered
Accountants of Ontario in 1969. While working in the accounting department at Bell Canada Harold met
Ann Olenchuk, and they were married in 1959. Harold and Ann moved to Thornhill Ontario where they
lived for almost 40 years before they retired and moved north to Oro Station on the shore of Lake
Simcoe.
Lake Simcoe was familiar territory for Harold, as his family had lakefront property in Alcona before he
was even born. He grew up enjoying his summers at the lake, and there are many pictures of many
happy days with him as a boy, a young man and then a father with his own family enjoying the cottage.
Harold was a gentle giant – a very calm and quiet man unless it was time to dance, comment on
whatever sports were on the T.V. or dominate a game of euchre. He worked tirelessly to provide for his
family and spent hours behind the wheel touring us safely around our many adventures and activities
growing up. Weekend trips to Lake Simcoe, pulling increasingly larger RVs to the east coast and rustic
summer weekends around the campfire are all part of our story. Harold volunteered on the executive of
the Heintzman House and as a hockey coach for both of his sons, and with Ann he developed many close
friendships through their daughter’s figure skating. He continued to enjoy watching his grandchildren’s
sports, and even when he was not able to attend, he kept up on all the results and shared them proudly
with everyone. In every aspect of his life Harold supported his family and gave everything he had to
seeing us through.
When it was time to move from Oro, Harold and Ann moved closer to family in the Hamilton area. They
enjoyed time together at Burlington Gardens in Aldershot, Ontario before Ann moved to Alexander Place
and Harold subsequently moved to Blackadar following Ann’s passing.
We are grateful for the care Dad received during his time in Joseph Brant Hospital and then Blackadar. A
private graveside service will be held in Stroud, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, please offer a donation to the
charity of your choice in Harold’s name.
