After a six-month battle with cancer, Jimmie Norman Graham, PhD, passed away Tuesday, August 23, 2022, at Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, surrounded by his family, at age 79.
Born in Los Angeles, the second son of Norma and Joe Graham, he outlived both his older and younger brothers.
After completing high school at Downey High, he studied math at Long Beach State graduating with a BA.
During his time as an undergrad, he took a year off to travel extensively through Europe, Africa and South America, and reminisced often about his adventures.
He married Gunhilde in 1967 and finished his Masters in Mathematics at UMass, Amherst, the following year.
In 1968, they moved to Montreal where Jim started postgraduate studies at McGill. In 1973, he completed his PhD in math. The same year he started teaching math at Dawson College and did so until his retirement while often also teaching part-time at Marianapolis and McGill.
As a teacher and privately, Jim assisted many to overcome their difficulties in mathematics. In addition, he also engaged in the challenges of home renovation, gardening, feeding the resident cardinals in his backyard, brewing his own beer and wine while enjoying an eclectic mix of blues, bluegrass, country/western and folk music.
Dutiful and loving, he will be sorely missed by his wife of 55 years, Gunhilde, his daughter Sarah (Stephen) , grandson James, son Jubal and by his younger sister and extended family in California.
He will live in our hearts forever.
A visitation will be held after cremation.
