Gordon Sidney Berry 2022

Lovingly surrounded by family, Gordon Sidney Berry passed away peacefully on Tuesday July 12, 2022, at Northumberland Hills Hospital in his 93rd year. Loving father of Heather and Scott, cherished Poppa of Emma, Megan, Dawson and Fraser and caring father in-law to Tracy and Mike.
As a traveller, writer, artist, naturalist, craftsman, and musician, Gordon was a dedicated life-long learner. He led a vibrant life filled with vast experiences and artistic expression.
Gordon grew up in Surrey County, England, where at the age of seventeen his adolescence was cut short by the war. He first taught at a technical college and was later stationed as a sergeant in post-war Germany where he developed and taught courses to servicemen. As a young man, he began to explore the world and immigrated to Canada in 1956, where he put down roots in Peterborough to start a family and begin his teaching career in Science and Biology.
He travelled extensively throughout his life across six continents and over 150 countries. His wanderlust was a life-long passion, filled with adventures, cultural experiences, hiking in the woods, and outdoor canoe trips on many of Canada’s lakes and rivers.
Gordon also had a deep love for music. He mastered the piano, pipe organ, harpsichord, and recorders. He also sang and played in several groups throughout his life.
Gordon wrote several Science textbooks, and self published many other books. Upper Stoney Lake: Gem of the Kawarthas, a collection of stories, writings, and rare photographs of early life on Stoney Lake, was especially close to his heart. The Berry Patch Island cottage was where Gordon was most content, surrounded by his family, friends, and nature.
As an accomplished nature photographer, Gordon had a unique interest in wildflowers and rare orchids of Ontario. Through his artistic talents, he was able to creatively express himself using a variety of mediums including paint, graphite, stone, and wood. Through his paintings, sketches and carvings, Gordon brought to life colourful landscapes, historical images, animals, and people. His paintings, many of which have been featured and sold in art shows and galleries, bring joy to a great many friends and family.
His life was well lived, enriched by experiences, accomplishments, friends and most importantly, family. He will be sadly missed, but through his many talented creations, our fond and loving memories of Gordon will live on.
There will be a celebration of life for friends and family later this summer.
