Obituary of Gord Morton
June 26, 1927 – January 14, 2022.
Dearly loved Dad of Heather and Greg and devoted husband of the late Fay Morton (1989) and companion of the late Mabel Hives (2021).
Dad was an active community member throughout his lifetime. Creating the Men’s Major Bowling League, leading Boy Scouts, coaching children’s bowling and baseball, becoming a founding member of the Georgetown Senior’s Centre, today a thriving hub for seniors to meet and enjoy a range of shared activities, Dad was an avid participant in the Seniors’ Games across Canada. At age 73 he became a Crossing Guard and so enjoyed meeting the families and especially, the family dogs. An active member of Holy Cross Church (now Sacre Couer), he helped to fund raise for the former, “new” church location on Maple Avenue, was an Usher before the dawn of the Parish Council and enjoyed a lifetime friendship with Father Dave and “the boys”. The annual Superbowl, card playing weekend that continued after Father Dave’s transfer to Hanover was a highlight. Dad added curling to his pursuits, enjoying the camaraderie and kinship of his team mates and attending bonspiels throughout the Province. In 1973, he became a member of the Knights of Columbus, fulfilling roles as a Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator. He conceived and hosted the annual “Bluebird Golf Classic”, a fundraiser for the Arthritis Society that ran under his leadership for decades. He also hosted the Gord Morton “Fun Day” bowling tournament for ten years. Through these initiatives, Dad made many lifelong friends amongst the community, business and its leaders and was always grateful for local business support whether it was a contribution to the “prize table” or receiving his call whether able to contribute or not. An honourable and ethical man, he sat on several boards as President, Treasurer or Secretary, open to filling in whatever role needed to be met.
He enjoyed a successful career as General Manager of L.H. Frost and later with Inglis Limited where his leadership, sense of fairness, thoroughness and efficiency combined with his regard for people prompted many engaging stories from his colleagues when he retired, many of with whom maintained contact.
Mom and Dad were married for 39 years before her sudden death in 1989. Mom being a minimalist, any hobbies and collections had to be neatly tucked away. The collector in
Dad was unleashed with her passing, with everything from marbles to iron car banks occupying open surfaces. Mabel, whom he met in 1992 shared his passion for collecting. He had a great sense of fun, “loved to kid around”, getting together with friends whether bowling, square dancing, house parties, or, for a game of cards. He travelled across Canada and throughout the United States. He enjoyed Vegas and cruises, the people he met, the warm climates and soaking up the sun. Car rides on a sunny day and road trips with no destination in mind were particular favourites. Amongst his final words were, “I’m planning a road trip, I don’t know where”. He always said it was important to have something to look forward to…
Visitation will be at the Jones Funeral Home, 11582 Trafalgar Road, Georgetown (905)877-3631 on Friday, January 21st from 3-5. Funeral Mass at Holy Cross Church, 14400 Argyll Road, Georgetown on Saturday, January 22nd at 10:30. Mindful of the well-being of others and consistent with Dad’s regard for the community, all are invited who are fully vaccinated. If unable to attend for any reason, please take a moment to remember an enjoyable memory with Dad. In lieu of flowers, donations to a local food bank, animal shelter or a charity of your choice are appreciated.
