Goldie’s Obituary
McGill, Goldie Marie – Age 84, of Wilmot, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2022, in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, N.S.
Goldie loved unconditionally, unequivocally and unabashedly.
Sometimes in life you meet that special someone who truly accepts you – all of you. This was Goldie. She knew exactly what to say to put you at ease and make you feel at home. She had a natural way of making you want to be a better person while simultaneously making you feel that you were more than enough already.
Family was everything to her. Those lucky enough to call her ‘Mom,’ ‘Nan’ or ‘Nanny Goldie’ had an unwavering super-fan singing their praises at every opportunity. She is pre-deceased by her late husband, Vernon McGill, and survived by their three children; Wayne (Christina) McGill, Kathy (Kendall) Cross and Valerie (Bruce) Thompson; grandchildren Kyle (Jenna), Ashley (Megan), and Bradley (Jess); and great-grandchildren Carson, Liam and Ethen.
Goldie loved being in the company of others and bringing her family and friends together. She taught anyone willing to learn how to REALLY play cards, the importance of sorting puzzle pieces and, most of all, how to make an honest living and truly love. She filled rooms with warmth, kindness, laughter and – on the best of days when her kitchen was packed to capacity – scents of homemade bread, dinner rolls and pies made from scratch. She was always making, baking, or taking something to someone, never expecting anything in return.
True to her Dalton roots, she loved music and seized every opportunity to attend a bluegrass festival in Black Rock or live show. She is to thank (blame?) for countless impromptu dance parties and sing-alongs. Though she did not bestow her harmonic range or rhythm upon her grandchildren, her smile, wit and kindness can easily be seen in the family she so proudly raised. She found immense joy and comfort in the company of her brothers: Roy, Alfred, Gerald, Eddie and Reggie. Originally from Waterville, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Flora (Hudgins) Dalton.
There is no doubt she would be saying “stop that crying” as her loved ones mourn in the wake of this tremendous loss. She cared deeply and never wanted to see anyone upset, often going to great lengths to turn a frown upside down. She would never hesitate to help if you needed her (and sometimes she knew before you did when you needed her).
She would not only count her own blessings, but also yours. Her hallmark smile, kind and generous spirit, and unconditional love will be dearly missed.
Thank you to the standout caregivers who provided compassionate care in the darkest hours. Special thanks to the nurses and doctors at Valley Regional Hospital for the palliative care that brought dignity, peace and comfort in her final days.
Donations in Goldie’s memory can be made to the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation.
A graveside service will be held in Fairview Cemetery (425 Highway 201, Lawrencetown) Aug. 28 at 1 p.m. Rev. Sharon Budd officiating.
