It is with extreme sadness we announce that Gerrie lost her 5-year battle with cancer and passed away at Royal Jubilee Hospital on November 27th. She lived a full, loving and giving life and will be sorely missed.
Gerrie was born in Camrose, Alberta and after her father died when she was six, the family moved quite often until her mother finally was hired as an accounting clerk in the Saanich water department. Gerrie excelled in school and after graduating and then completing a diploma in business school she embarked on a career in corporate banking. This was a serendipitous move as in 1966 an interesting young man was transferred to her branch and she and Jerry were married the following year.
In 1969 they purchased some recreational property on Mayne Island and built their first cottage in 1973 which became their beloved second home. With the birth of their two sons in 1981 and 1983, Gerrie retired from the corporate world and became a full-time Mom enjoying the family hobby farm in Langley where they lived for 25 years. Gerrie was always ready to help the community and in 1989 she joined the Langley RCMP Detachment as a civilian employee tasked with the massive undertaking of introducing the Block Watch program to the Township. Gerrie and Jerry retired from business life in 2008 moving full-time to their home on Mayne. However, Gerrie was still not ready to sit still so she volunteered to become the Coordinator of the Island’s emergency program. For the next ten years she worked tirelessly to engage additional volunteers while professionalizing and growing the operation. She passed the program on to the next Coordinator as a group able to offer meaningful assistance to Islanders when needed.
Gerrie is survived by her loving husband Jerry of 55 years, their two sons, wives and grandchildren as well as her sister Daisy. A celebration of Gerrie’s life will be held in the Spring.
