After a battle with cancer and due to complications from COVID, George Cawfield passed away at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital on the morning of Sunday, November 6, 2022. George was a tireless fighter for the extension of God’s kingdom on earth. In the 1940’s he served congregations in Northern Ireland while working as an airplane riveter. During World War II, he was a member of the British Army Militia. George decided to move his family to Canada in 1955. His first church in Canada was in LANARK – and he loved Lanark village and the Lanark Highlands deeply. He served four churches in the Lanark area. After 1960, his other churches in Canada were in Edmonton, Winchester-SouthGower – Ormond, and Petrolia. In 1975, he felt a call to “seed” a new Church, Kanata Baptist. He showed great energy in building up the congregation often through work done on a door-to-door basis. The new Kanata Baptist Church opened on Hazeldean Road in 1985. After his “retirement” in 1985, George served as minister to nine congregations throughout the Ottawa Valley. His “retirement” was hardly retirement!
George was well-known on Abbeyhill Drive in Kanata as an avid gardener. He loved going on long hikes from Kanata to Stittsville and back, which his wife, Ina, thought were“dangerous”. Up until his 90’s, he loved biking along the Kanata trails.
George was known in the Ottawa Valley for his love for others, a peaceful attitude, incredible energy, deep faith, and his Irish wit and ability to tell long stories. He is survived by his son, Brian Scott Cawfield, and his daughter-in-law, Diana. He will always be remembered in this area as a “pioneer” in building and as an excellent communicator of positive messages.
A Memorial Service celebrating George’s life will be held on Tuesday, December 6, 2022 in the Kanata Baptist Church, 465 Hazeldean Road, Kanata at 1:00p.m.
Special thanks to Carolyn and David Brown, who alleviated any suffering and looked after George on a regular basis during his final years. Thank you to the ministers of Kanata Baptist Church. Thanks also to the doctors at the Queensway-Carleton Hospital, Kimberly Daunais-Griffith and a caring staff at Chartwell Empress Kanata, dermatologist Dr. Shukla, and others in the Ottawa area who showed an interest in George’s care. C’etait un homme de conviction et de courage. .
