Freddy Buckingham of Mira Road passed away with family by his side on Tuesday, October 11th, 2022.
Freddy was born April 12th, 1964. He spent his childhood growing up on Mira Road playing baseball and hockey with his many lifelong friends. When you were Freddy’s friend, you were Freddy’s friend. There was never a doubt. He was loyal to a fault.
Hockey and sports were such an important part of his life. Freddy was a diehard Philadelphia Flyers fan. He played the game of hockey as a child and loved his high school years playing for the Riverview Redmen. He would tell you, he never ever had the “North Sydney Flu.”
Freddy loved music, particularly country music. The tunes of Mark Chesnutt, George Strait and Bob Seger could be heard throughout the house.
He and his loving wife of 34 years, Charlotte, raised two athletic and charming young men. He loved to watch Jonathan and Brandon play sports as they grew up. Attending cold rinks and Sunday morning football games, these were the moments he loved. Freddy was very proud of his two sons. He said many times the two greatest days of his life were when his sons were born. It was even better than winning the High School Metros Hockey Tournament.
Freddy loved being with family at Christmastime. The Buckingham and Haddad families had huge Christmas dinners. Freddy (when he wasn’t dressing up as Santa) was there in the middle of the gathering keeping the jokes flowing and the laughs going. The Christmas Eve parties were amazing events for family and friends.
Freddy was predeceased by his father, Frank; his brothers, Richard and Alan; and aunt and uncle, Clara and Roy Pace.
Besides his loving wife, Charlotte, Freddy is survived by his sons, Jonathan and Brandon (Hillary); mother, Laurel; three siblings, his sister, Sharon (Raymond), Lawrence and Roy (Julie); brothers-in-law, Chris (Paulette) and Barkley (Kathy); sister-in-law, Charmaine (Derek); and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his two furry companions, Doug and Snoop.
Freddy loved dogs and owned many over the years. Several of his pets were named after Flyers’ greats. He enjoyed their companionship over the years.
At the family’s request, there will be no visitation. A small, private service will be held. A Celebration of Life will take place Tuesday, October 18th, 2022 beginning at 4pm at the Steel City Sports Bar.
Donations in Freddy’s name may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County.
