(Fred) Merrill Frederick Bartlett
1929-2022
Fred Bartlett of Fredericton, NB passed away on March 23, 2022 at
Shannex Thomas Hall, Fredericton, NB. He was born on December 14,
1929 at Woodstock, NB, a son of the late Frederick and Verna (Stairs)
Bartlett.
Fred is survived by his wife Eleanor (Swan) Bartlett; two daughters,
Sheryl Bartlett (Bill Ross) and Cindy Bartlett; a son David Bartlett
(Donna Wilson); granddaughters Sandy Bartlett-Laver, Tasha (Bartlett)
Clowater (Steve), Clair Bartlett-Laver and Kathryn Bartlett; a great
grandson Aiden Clowater; special grandchildren Dan Ross (Ingrid
Kiffmeyer) and Julia Ross; a brother-in-law Burke Swan (Patricia
(Hershell) Swan); and his pet Tweetie the cat.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother Franklin
Bartlett; sisters Faye Flake, Jean Taylor and Mae Bartlett; a
brother-in-aw Matthew Swan and a sister-in-law Jocelean (Swan)
Hall.
Fred was a scientist, craftsman, collector and family historian. He
earned a doctorate in chemistry at the University of New Brunswick in
1954, after which he worked first as a postdoctoral fellow with Nobel
Prize winner Vincent du Vigneaud at Cornell University Medical College
in New York City, then as a scientist and director of research in drug
metabolism in the pharmaceutical industry. Among other interests,
woodworking was a lifelong passion, inspiring him to produce a number
of exquisite pieces of furniture. He also wrote genealogy articles
about his family history.
In 1954 he married Eleanor Swan and they built a life together first
in New Jersey, then in Fredericton, NB after Fred retired in 1986.
Together they instilled in us a love for learning, family, and for
Harvey Lake, New Brunswick which became the family gathering place.
We will be forever grateful for his love and support throughout the
years.
We thank staff at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, the Oromocto
Public Hospital and Thomas Hall for their excellent and compassionate
care of our father over the past several months.
There will be no visitation or funeral. Interment will take place at a
later date at the Harvey Settlement Cemetery in Harvey, York County,
New Brunswick. A small family gathering will take place later.
